RESOLUTIONS BY JACKSON
METHODIST CHURCH
To the Hon. S. M. Mays and
Jas. J. Flynt, Atlanta: At the
rqgular Sunday morning service,
Aug. 23, 1908, there was brought
to the attention of the Jackson
Methodist church the question of
the present convict lease system;
whereupon, the congregation en
tered its emphatic protest against
the present lease system as un
just and unrighteous, and wholly
out of keeping with the dignity,
the wisdom and the compassion
of a Christian commonwealth,
and urged by unanimous voice
that the stain be speedily re
moved from our State.
At the same time and place at
tention was called to the fact
that our prohibition law is being
flagrantly violated and defeated
through the licensing of the man
ufacture and sale of so-called
“near beer.”
And since the Governor has
called the legislature in extra
ordinary session to consider these
measures, therefore, be it
Resolved, Ist. That we earn
estly request our senator and
representative, the Honorable J.
J. Flynt and S. M. Mays to lend
their influence toward the abol
ishment of the present lease
system, and secure such pro
vision for our convicts as will
comport with the wisdom and
compassion of a great Christian
commonwealth.
2. We urge upon our senator
and representative to use all
their powers to guard the present
prohibition law; and to further
strengthen that law by the en
actment of such legislation as
will prohibit the manufacture and
sale of “near beer.”
3. That these resolutions be
duly forwarded to our senator
and representative, and be pub
lished in our county papers.
S. P. Wiggins, Pastor.

J. L. Lyons,

GILES GETS TWO YEARS;
MOTION FOR NEW TRIAL
“Involuntary manslaughter in
the commission of an unlawful
act” was the verdict returned
against Searcy Giles charged with
the murder of Elbert Thompson.
Judge Reagan passed sentence of
two years in the penitentiary.
Motion for anew trial is pend
ing and will be heard in Decem
ber. Giles is out on bond.
The defense was represented
by Threatt Moore, Y. A. Wright
and A. W. Lane, of Macon. Both
sides fought hard for the verdict,
but the trial was conducted in
such a manner to arouse as
little bitterness of feeling as
possible which usually accomp
anies such cases.
Four murder cases are dock
eted for the adjourned term.
