Write on one side of the paper only, sign your name, not for publication, but as an evidence of good faith. Register Before April Sixth. The time is nearly up. Have you registered? Are you in favor of anew ho tel and if not, why not? Covington is to have anew $25,000 hotel. Why not Jackson? Sny anew hotel and say it plain. The city needs it. Every body admits it. Then how much will you subscribe? Lets get: down to a working basis. How long before the people pull together and decide to build that new hotel? What is the use in waiting? It is coming sooner or later and t he sooner the better. After the action of the state executive committee on April 4, there will be some interesting political developments that wil make the boys sit up and take notice. Butts csunty roads will com pare favorably with any in the state. The chain gang has done good work in the past few years and the people want to see more of this good work. Why is it that the people of Jackson do not get together and decide to secure some new man ufacturing plants? Everybody who is interested in the town knows we need them. It is to be sincerely hoped that Macon will be anle to secure the necessary capital to insure navi gation on the Ocmulgee. It is a far-reaching step and one that will benefit all Middle Georgia. Tom Watson is hitting the Frank case some hard .jolts. Whether one agrees with him or not, there is no question but that Watson is doing a great service in hitting sham and hypocrisy in high places. The towns ail around Jackson are securing new enterprises. None of them are so fortunate in the matter of cheap electric pow er. There is nothing keeping Jackson back but indifference. Where do you stand? Butts county has made greater strides in road building since the convicts were put on the public roads than at any other time in her history. The people appre ciate this service and want the convicts to remain where they are. Butts county is going to have more than a hundred boys in her corn club this year. That will mean big things. Practically all the country newspapers are a unit in con demning the manner in which the Phagan case has been han dled recently. If anew trial is granted Frank, they want to see it come through the courts and j not through the public. The Tongue of Scandal. A scandal monger has come to grief in Georgia; has gone to the penitentiary, at least has been sentenced there for twelve months. And justly so. This young man, with his glib tongue, went about his community utter ing untruths about a young wom an. The girl’s father sought his indictment and punishment. The case came up in Gwinnett county. Readers of The Chronicle will recall it, it having been giv en in the news columns at that time. An extract from the tel egram under an Athens, Ga,, date, is; “Scandal and careless talk by men about women and by women about other women will be mate rially lessened in Georgia if there are many cases in many counties like the one tried in the adjacent county of Gwinnett this week, when Luther Terry, a white boy, was sent to the chaingang for twelve months, without a chance to pay a tine, for defaming the good name of a girl who had at her father’s command instructed him to cease paying attentions to her. The tales he told persistent ly were damaging and in court proven untrue. This is the first case of the kind that lawyers of this section recall. The act was passed in 1909.” Splendid! Of late days men — especially young nien—are be coming too quick of tongue, too free of speech, and too swift of gab in speaking in detriment of young women. This is true in Augusta as it is true in other communities of which we know. There was the time in the South—and it was an effective way, even if in law irregular — when sons, brothers and fathers, with a cowhide, met this kind of scandal monging with lashes and slashes across the face, head and body. The chaingang sentence of 12 months will have its influence, for by fear of the law, the as sailant of woman’s fair name must be checked, in that he has little of honor and little of pride to which to appeal or which to hurt or harm or shock. We want to thank the Gwin nett father, the Gwinnett judge, the Gwinnett solicitor and the Gwinnett jury in this case. We want to reprint the news story, and we want ali the papers in the state to print it that that the scandal mongers may read it and ponder it. and that they may know that their insinuations and falsehoods will land them in jail with “stripes across their backs and shackles on their feet.” It is high time that it be made A TEXAS WONDER.
