A happy New Year with success

A Cokfidsncb Game.—An aged
gentleman; representing himself as
an slab ami ah-.* Wtjpt ’to police head-,
quarters yesterday about r;oon and
reported the Station-House Keeper
Haynes the loss of two hundred and
fifty dollWtfc.' The Gentleman, who
declined to give his nane : and whe
seem* to be ignorant ol the ’wicked
ways of the world, says that about
tan o’clock in the morning two men
approached calling him by
name *xpresie4 great * pleasure at
meeting him in* Atlanta. They
asked him about his home, his bus
iness his family, and seemed thor
oughly acquainted with him and all
his interest, but for the life of him
he could not recall them. Howev
er one #1 the strangers succeeded in
recalling himself to the aged gen
tleman’s mind, and then the three
began a promenade, which lasted
for an hour pr so, after which they
repaired to the car shed. While
st&ndjng in front of the ladies’ sa
loon discussing the relative merits
of Alabama and Georgia a man ap
proached them and presented one
of the young men with a bill for
SI,OOO. the amonnt of his purchases
from a dry goods house in this city.
The person to whom the bill was
presented drew out his pocket-book
and took therefrom five hundred
dollars. He then turned to his
yonng companion and said : “I have
only five hundred dollars. Let me
have as much more and I will re
turn it as soon aa I get this check
eashed?” “Certaiely was the reply,
as the man drew his purse, but in
it only two hundred and fifty dol
lars were found. “I have not so
much,” suid he, “but taka this.”
Then turning to tho old ge-ntlenan
who had been quietly looking on,
the man to whon th§ bill had been
presented, said: “Let me have two
hundred and fifty dollars to pay
for these goods, and I will return
it as soon as we can reach a bank.”
The old gentleman quickly put his
hand in his pocket and pulled forth
a pocket-bcok well filled with bank
bills and handed his Alabama friend
five fifties, which were given the
person who presented tbo bill. Soon

MR. AND MRS. KIMBALL BECOME THE
RECIPIENTS OF A PRESENT.
At 3 o’clock yesterday evening
while Director General Kimball was
as usual “up to his ears” in business
Mr* Otis, of the J. & P Coats’s
exhibit, stepped into Mr. Kimdall’s
office and iuformed him that his
presence was demanded instantly
in the the president’s room. With
very little delay the director general
repaired thither wheie a most plea
sant surprise met him. Mrs. kimball,
was upon the ground and she too
had been unceremoniously summon
ed. Upon thhe table in the centre of
the room was a beautilful -silver
service of nine pieces with a card
bearing the doners name* :
Before the director-general had
been giving time to fully understand
the situation, Major'Moses Gibson
of Louisville, addressing Mr. and
Mrs. Kimball, said:

Let us extend to Mrs Kimball our
beet Wishes and heartfelt greeting
recognizing in her the truest tlpe
of American womanhood. To-day
we are surrounded by two of the
greatest civilizeers of the world’s
history, the religion of Jesus Christ
and the mtchaical invention of the
19th century. They gq hand |n
conquer the vice of life and to ben
efit the human race. Thier victories
are more numerors and lasting than
those of the greatest conqeurors
whoso name are emblazoned on the
pages of history. These twin cham
tion hays gipen to roman her true
position, the same almighty creator
inteded her to occupy, wjien our
mother Eve was placed in paradise
as the helpmate and compan ion of
Adam, and not as she since has
been made :by too many—thier
diuge and slave. To Anglo Sa:son
women belong the honor of elevat-
aud refining the manhood of Eu
rope and America . By love and
endearing influences they haov so
changed his nature as to mark a
new era in the history of the world
Where wars, crime and devastation
marked his ambition, by her in.
fluenee to-day happy homes, mon
ufactories, and thier attendant
blessing are seen in every hillside.
Is there a man in this audience who
wili not indorse every word I have
said of women? Not one.
Is there one aomng U3 who will

you again for the debt we owe you,
and pray that the future of you and
youra may be crowned with abun
dant success.
At the close of Mr. Gibson’s re
marks Mr. Kimball responded in a
feeling manner. Although taken
by surprise he was able to express
in fitting terms the high valuation
who had made him n |acfa*p iU..
present, and stated that pother
wonld ever be mere.appreciated arifi
prized by him than thWtJie J
of that esteem.
