THE CONNECTICUT HOUSE WAXES ELO
QUENT OVER SOME RESOLUTIONS.
In the Connecticut House of repre
sentatives Mr. Collier, of Darien, intro
duced the following:
“ Resolved , That, having heard with
abhorrence of the attempts to destroy
the Honses of Parliament in Great
Britain, and of the imperiling thereby
of the lives of innocent and unsuspecting
persons, the General Assembly hereby
declare its condemnation of such detest
able crimes against humanity, law, or
der and civiiiz-stion.”
One or two of the members protested
.bat the State of Connecticut had no
business with such a resolution. Law
yer Pigott, of New Haven, bad the reso
lution tabled long enough for him to
prepare the following as au amendment:
“But, in the adoption of this resolu
tion, the General Assembly remember
with equal feeling of horror the mas
sacre of her sons at Fort Griswold in the
Revolution by British troops, the sack
ing of our national capital in the war of
ISI2 by Biitish troops and the letting
loose of privateers from English ports to
prey on our commerce in the late war;
and that we do not acknowledge by the
passage of the above resolution any
responsibility on the part of any Ameri
can outrages complained of.”
This nonplussed the legislators still
more, and gallons of eloquence were di
rected against the amendment. One
man thought it idle to tight the Revolu
tion over again. Another that the
dynamiters might operate on the local
eapitol, and still another that the Legis
lature was more likely to be blown up
with wind than with dynamite. The
amendment was finally made a humor
ous football, and Editor Troup, the
senior member from New Haven, sar
castically proposed this amendment to
the junior member’s amendment:
‘ '/iesolved, That we are likewise op
posed to the persecution of St. Paul.”
This brought the House down in
rears of laughter. Mr. Troup said
Connecticut had no diplomatic relations
with England, and very likely Qaeen
Victoria would not hear of their action
anyway. Mr. Troup’s amendment was
withdrawn. Mr. Pigott’s was unani
mously tabled, and the Collier recolutaoa
was passed.

BY ITS AID A MIDGET GIVES BIRTH TO A
CHILD OF ORDINARY btzw,
A dispatch dated Syracuse, N. Y.,
says: Mrs. Charles G. Roberts, better
known as the “Midget,” was taken 111
on Wednesday, and at two o’clock was
delivered of a male child weighing seven
and a half pounds by the Caesarean
operation. An examination by the
physicians showed that the child was in
a transverse position, and in order to
save the life of the Little woman Vm tin
natural means was resorted to. The
child lived bat a few hours. The con
dition of the patient is hopoful. Mrs.
Roberts was formerly Miss Frankie
Thompson, and was born in Syracuse.
She is thirty-two years old, thirty-three
inches tall and weighs only about forty
pounds. She was married about two
years ago to Mr. Roberts, who is six
feet tall and heavily built They were
married while traveling as members of
the same company iD the West. He
was a musician. They have traveled
together and exhibited in New York
and Boston. They havo visited every
city in the United States and Canada.
Mrs. Roberts’ father died in Syracuse
in 1864. He was a dwarf only three
feet high. By his first wife he had
three child ren„ by his second nine and
by a third eleven. Among the latter
number was Frankie. She was per
fectly formed at birth, and when a week
old weighed only three pounds, clothes
included. When she was three years
old Mr. P. T. Barnum offered her father
$3,000 for the privilege of exhibiting her
one year in New York. The offer was
refused. At one time after her father’s
death Frankie engaged in dressmaking,
standing up to run her sewing machine.
Fourteen years ago she formed her first
engagement with a Western company
to travel. Her last engagement was in
Minneapolis. The physicians hope to
savo her life. If they do it will be one
case in twenty, they say, after an opera
tion of this kind.
Birds at Sea.
Several cases have been reported late
ly where ships have saved themselves
from probable destruction by tho use of
oil to quiet the waves. This had a good
effect upon all tho sea**, but especially
calmed the great foaming combers,
whose breaking force is most to be
dreaded. Few ships go to sea now with
out some arrangement for properly dis
pensing the oil. It has been suggested,
oy the way, that the reason why the
sea-wan dering birds are able to survive
tempests as they do is because of the
slow exudation of oil from their feathers,
forming a perpetual calm about them
wherever they float.
It Sliotild be Generally Known
ihat the multitude of diseases of a scrofulous
nature generally proceed from a torpid con
dition of the liver. The blood becomes im
pure because the liver does not act properly
and work off the poison from the system, and
the certain results are blotches, pimples, erup
tions, swellings, tumors, ulcers and kindred
affections, or settling upon the lungs and
poisoning their delicate tissues, until ulcera
tion, breaking down and consumption is es
tablished. Dr. Pierce’s “GoldeD Medical Dis
covery” will, by acting upon the liver and
purifying the blood, cure all these diseases.

A LIVING BAROMETER.
The Draili of n Ifcinnrkablc Negro-llov
he BeCitiuc a Barometer.
Hamilton Jay, in ft letter from Florida,
says: “There died in a little negro set
tlement at the beud of the river a black
man who had a somewhat remarkable
history and who was uoted for a physi
cal peculiarity puzzling' to medical and
scientific men. The name of this negro
was Zenith Pinkney, but he went by the
cognomen of Uncle Zene, and was neaily
eighty years old. He was of medium
height, very black, with pronounced Af
rican features, and strong and hearty
even at his advanced age.
“Uncle Zene was born a slave about
1800. He grew up with his master’s
family, and when only 6 years of age was
captured by the Seminole Indians. When
arriving at the Indian village he was
turned over to tho Indian children, as
their toy and playthiug. These little
redskins amused themselves by saturat
ing his mat of wool with water in spots,
and then firing the dry portions with fat
pine splinters. This destroyed the fol
licles in the burned places. No kair re
appeared, and to his dying day his head,
with its little irregular tufis of gray
wool, resembled a war map more tliar
anything else.
“Zenith came back to civilization with
Jackson’s defeat of the Indians, went to
Mexico with his master, was captured,
made his escape, and made his way to ar
English vessel lying off the coast.
“Now comes the strangest part of this
old African’s history. While the vessel
was at Panama he contracU and the terrible
Chagres fever, and for weeks and weeks
was raving in the strange, weird land of
delirium. Again he was a little boy
tumbling in the dirt of Tennessee; then
surrounded by fierce, wild faces, shiver
ing in the horrid din of savage warfare;
then toiling in the heat and gloom of
foreign mines, eating the bitter bread of
unceasing labor. Good nursing and a
strong constitution brought him around
again, and he was once more at his post,
concocting savory messes for the British
sailors. About a week after he returned
to duty he noticed a small white spot on
the ulaer muscle of his left foreaim. It
was about the size of a pea, and seemed
to move in a hidden groove. He noticed
that it seemed susceptible to all fl ictua
tions of the weather, and called the Cap
tain’s attention to it. ‘I guess you have
turned into a barometer,’ said that
worthy, and gave the matter no more at
tentiou.
“On the vessel was an old sailor, verv
fond of tattooing, and having all the
necessary implements with him. Bor
rowing the Captain’s barometer he pro
ceeded -to make a dnplicate on Uncle
Zone’s arm, marking it out in red ink,
the white spot masquerading as the mer
cury in the bulb. His work was done
in a masterly manner, and the result
showed that the negro had Indeed be
come a human barometer: He foretold
storms and weather changes with accu
racy, the white spot moving with as
much precision, rising and falling with
the scientific marvel that hung in the
Captain’s cabin.
“Uncle Zene returned to this country
in 1870, and having traced up some of
bis people who were living in this
State, built a little cabin near them, and
earned a frugal living by fishing and
doing odd jobs in the neighborhood.
He was quite an oracle among the ne
groes, and took great delight in re
counting to them his wonderful adven
tures, and in exhibiting his tattooed
arm. The negroes were somewhat afraid
of this, and avoided him on stormy days,
entertaining a vague belief that he could
have prevented the storm if he so de
sired. His death was due to what the
doctor’s politely call alcoholism, and was
caused by a laudable but injudicious ef
fort on his part to drink up all the
whisky in the country, in the small
space of twenty-four hours. After his
death the tattooed arm turned a deep
sodden black, and the white spot sank
in, leaving a depression into which the
end of a finger could be placed.”
