IN SOCIAL CIRCLES.
Of all the charming entertain
tainments, which make up the
social delight of all the Jackson
young people the one given by
Dr. O. H. Cantrell on Tuesday
evening was the most royal and
sumptuous.
The Doctor and his charming
wile have won the lasting gradi
tude of the young people for the
most exqusite and elaborate feat,
and above all for all the
great delight and pleasure of be
ing presented to the beautiful
and accomplished Miss Myrtis
Peavy of Greenville Ga. -
When we think of describing
the occasion we would fain lay
down our pen, telling the plain
truth, that is, “beggars descrip
tion/’ We would attempt a
rough sketch howe\er, which the
embraces our utmost ability as a
“pen artist.”
Tuesday night as the moon
peeped through the bare branch
es of a giove ot sturdy oaks it
smiled upon numerous couoles
passing through the checkered
eights and shadows with their
steps tending toward a scene re
splendant with light, and
warmth.
If any one thought of Gabe
Mose and the Goblins as they
came through the shadowy grove;
the brightness oftheir destination
scattered such fancies to the
winds. The grounds and veran
das were beautifully decorated
with Japanese lanterns and from
the windows and doorway of the
cosy residence streamed bright
beams of warmth, light and
gayetv.
riic interior of the lovelv
home will long remain a bright
picture in the memory of those
present, tne testoons of trailing
ivy the sweetnesss of the flowers
together with every luxurious
comfort rendered everything en
tertaining how swiftly the
time flew by. At. 10 o’clock the
dining room was thrown open.
We cannot describe this any otn
er way than the crowning delight
of the many <hings prepared for
our comfort. There, aranged in
lovely taste, was e\ r ery delicy to
tempt the appitite of man. There
were silver baskefs supporting
every varit\ of the most exquisite
and delicate bakery, plates of snowy
ambrosia, beautiful fruit stands
bearing their blushing burdens,
fires from the tropics,
large lucious bra aches of white and
and purple grap as adding tempting 1
beauty to the rich piofussion of good
things.
While engaged in refreshing our
selves at the table we coula not re
tain ironj stealing a glance from be
hind pramids ot flowers and f ru j t at
the young ladies. .How dainty and
lovely they were !
Miss Peavy was most irrisistable
in rich evening dress of pink silk,
Miss Mary Duke was lovely in dark
crimson, peculiarly suited to her
brunette beauty. Mi&s Tusie Cald
well’s bright face and lovely curls
were most charming. She was be
coming in a fawn colored dress,
with flowers as orraments. Miss
Carrie Hitchens was indeed beauti
ful in pink silk. Miss Myrtle Pound
was charming as a rosebud, in pure
white. Miss Lillie Hightower’s
bright blonde face was beautiful in
contrast with a costume of dark
green. M i?s Florie Lee was sweet
purity itself in spotless white. Miss
Nellie Higgms wore cream mull.
For want of space we are com
pelled to describe the gentlemen col
lectively. A more handsome, gal
lant and brave company never
graced any party.
The young men present were.
Messes. Douglas Watson, Splint
Wynn, Charlie Beauchamp, Robt.
Carmichael, Harold Higgins, Ber
nard Wright, Clifford Carmichal,
Charlie Pinkney.
One Present.
The reception tendered by the
Misses Buttrill at their beautiful
home complimentary to their
friends, Col. and Mrs. Andrew W,
Lane } and Miss Mariam Price of
Atlanta, combined both luxury and
exquisite taste. The Buttrill man
sion is well adapted to entertaining
with its broad, stately corriders,
spacious verandas, grand parlors
and cosy tete-tete nooks. On the
happy occasion the elegant parlors
were opened wide with rich catheiine
mermet roses spicy cryeinthemums
but the crowning work of art was
the scene from nature over in the
large bay window with a hack
ground of misty filmy lace curtains
was an artistic arrangement of a
tree of bright hued antumn leaves,
displaying in harmony shades and
tints that could only have been
brought out by a perfect sense of
the aesthetic; the spacious hallway
was brilliantly illuminated with
pink ar.d tinted lights and adorned
with arches and bowers of autumn
leaves.
Misses Hattie and Mamie Battrill
have a wide circle of sincere and
adm Ding friends, many of whom
were present oa this delightful eve
ning. In the midst ot these lovely
surroundings Miss llattie reeieved
har guests in a dainty cream erepon
fitting the exquisitely rounded little
figure perfectly. From the hack fell
a rich handsome moire saah the full
iengh of the train. In her hair she
wore snowy China-asters. Very
beautiful was Miss Hattie as she
stood so gracefully under the soft
yellow ligats. Miss Mam ; e was
very distingue looking m a princess
entrain. The material was of finest
cream white cut in simplest fashion
a Walteau pleat providing a grace
full 4 .illness at the back. The trim
mings were of persian lamb, enhan
ingthe rare beaut} T of the fair face
with it acrown of featheiy gold. The
charming blonde sisters v ere assis
ted in relieving by Mariam
Price, one of the Gate's City’s most
brilliant brunettes, the peach blos
som silk costume she effected was
wondtrously becoming to the starry
Spanish eyes and waving brown
hair.
Mrs. Andrew Lane, a lovely Oc
tober bride, never looked sw eter
or fairer than on this evening in a
trailing sdk of silvery blue
with a ball of deep Mecklin lace
from the round painted yoke, the
greek draperv crossing the petite
figure and falling in a sash like
arrangement nearly to the hem ofth*
skirt. MissCleora Gibos appeared
so sweet and dainty in a pjre white
costume of admirable simplicity
that characterizes the taste ol tb\i
cultered young lady. Jaoksoi' s
soc al circle was glad to welcome
pretty Miss Myra Tollerson of >Lp
ticello on this evening Tins sweet
little lady looked like a spur of
applo blossoms in the delicate pink
gown >he wore. During the entire
evening Miss Helen Rogers was the
centre of the admiring coterie.
Trnh she is favored and smiled
upon both by Minetya and Verne*.
The banquet hall was elabor. tely
decorated, the mantle with trailing
filmilax, the two long tables
arranged diagonally across the
oroad hall were bright with unique
crystal antique gold and silver, thi
damask gleaming satin like under
the pink candelabra, and mellow
banquet lamps. Before each plate
of semi transparent serves was a
slender Venetian glass containing
dainty bouquets of odorous flowers
tied with baby ribbon presented to
the guests as souvenirs of this me
morable occasion. The menu was
elaborate ,<tnd in tbe t-kilful prepar
ation bespeaking the artistic super
vision ot the the elegant Mrs. Tay
lor Buttrill.
Col. Lana with his dignified yet
genial yet gracious manners en
hanced tbe pleasure of nil, a future
as bright aud lofty a3 bis asbitition
comes out for him.
Mr. Chas C, Smith never ap
peared more handsome aud gallant
as he did on this evening smiled
upon by three beautiful maiden?,
tbe brune and ths blondes.
Words of praise for tbe mueic
contributed by Misses R >ger s
Price, Gibbs, Col. and Mrs. Lane,
with Prof. Blasingaone, are unnec
essary, but tbe scene was complete
when the handsome lovelike groom
leaning tenderly forward gaz : ng
into the deptns of the sweet eyes of
his bride as I>e sang “Juanita.’
Mr. Taylor Buttrill was the typical
host, by his aflable manners mak
ing every one feel at ease, and that
they were recipients ot special cour
tesies. Many regrets were ex
pressed that Miss Mamie Ellis was
unable to attend on account of a sa
vere cold, she was giaatly mimed.
