DRIVEN TO DRINK.
Ed Harvey, whose head is so red
that if a hair was broken he would
bleed to death, was this morning ar
raigned for drinking and fighting.
Ed plead his own case and his declar
ation, though not formerly tiled, was
a corker if it didn’t go.
Ed says that he had been out of
town and had been dead straight for
some time til! he heard the terrible
yellow fever outbreak, aud he made
up his mind that he was a certain
victim and it prayed upon his mind
till it drove him to hard drink, and
being drunk and leeling that within a
few short hours at least he must suc
cumb to yellow jack, he didn’t care
what he did. Rut since he had got
to take a brighter view of the out
look, he submitted these sympathy
iuspiring facts and asked for mercy.
But as this was not mercy day, and
Judge Freeman thought Ed had been
unduly alarmed at the yellow fever
situation, he gave him sls and
costs.—Macon News.
A SAD DEATH.
One of the saddest deaths that has
occurred here in quite a while was
that of Mr. W. B. Browning, the
book-keeper of the Star Store. Mr.
Browning was a fine business man
aud for several years was connected
with the Macon Grocery Store, and
the Star Store people learning of his
superior worth secured him on the
Istinst., aud on the 10th he was taKeu
with inflamation of the stomach and
died on the 14tli at the Morrison
House. His death was deeply de
plored by all our people, aud all the
stores were closed to attain! his burial.
His rernaius were interred in Jackson
cemetery on Monday.
