Some interesting particulars with
regard to this subject are given in
the Norsk Skibsforerforening Tid
ende. Norwegian seamen, it ap
pears, are now entitod to vote be
fore leaving their country if the
polling day is within three months
of their departure, or they can vote
at a foreign port within the same
time by having their votes register
ed and sent home through a Nor
wegian consul or through a notary,
if they are not on board a Norwe
gian ship. If on board a Norwegian
ship where there are not less than
four of the crew entitled to vote,
then the captain and two of them
are to administer the polling. It is
not absolutely necessary to vote for
named persons. Votes maybe given
for Liberal or Conservative candi
dates. Seamen who would vote
must provide themselves with a
proxy form, to be obtained from a
registrar of voters in Norway.
N. P. Banks as speaker of the house
was simply magnificent. He was
the beau ideal of a parliamen
tarian in form, voice and action.
“Sunset” Cox once said that “Banks’
methods in presiding were like the
music of the spheres.” His voice
rang out amid the wildest commo
tion and order instantly prevailed.

There is at least one law in Hun
gary which might be copied by oth
er countries of the world. This is
the prohibition applied to cripples
and people who are deformed enough
to offend the public eye from selling
papers on the public thoroughfares.
In addition children under 14 may
not be employed in the trade.
A story is told of the late Baron
Hirsch that conveys a valuable les
son. After writing a message an
nouncing the gift of a fortune to a
school the great millionaire went
over the telegram carefully a second
time, condensing it so as to save a
franc. - ,

Some Florida Rivers.
F. R. Spearman writes in St. Nich
olas of “Queer American Rivers.”
Mr. Spearman in speaking of the
peculiar streams of Florida says:
In Florida one may have another
odd experience, a river ride in an
ox cart. Florida rivers are usually
shallow, and when the water is high
you can travel for miles across coun
try behind oxen, with more or less
river under you all the way. There
are ancient jokes about Florida
steamboats that travel on heavy
dews and use spades for paddlo
wheels.
But those of you who have been
on its rivers know there is but one
Florida, with its bearded oaks and
fronded palms, its dusky woods,
carpeted with glassy waters; its cy
press bays, where lonely cranes
pose, silently thoughtful (of stray
polliwogs), and its birds of won
drous plumage that rise with star
tled splash when the noiseless canoe
glides down upon their Launts.
Every strange fowl and every
hideous reptile, every singular plant
and every tangled jungle, will tell
the American boy how far he is to
the south. Florida is, in fact, his
corner of the tropics, and the clear
waters of its rivers, stained to bro wn
and wine color with the juices of a
tropical vegetation, will tell him, if
he reads nature's book, how differ
ent the sandy soil of the south is
from the yellow mold of the great
western plains.

THE JACKSON ARGUS.
At last the important news comes
that the great literary work contri
buted to by the Rt. Hon. William E.
Gladstone and his seventeen scholarly
confreres has been plated by the
publisher on the general book market
and is now within the tasy reach of
everyone in this community. We
refer to the People’s Bible History.
It is well worth while looking this
over just to see the great names in all
denominations of faith who have
been laDoring in this notable under
taking and to realize the comprehen
sive way in which they have carried
out the plan of producing a through
ly complete and modern presentation j
of the Bible in its hostorical aspects.
Whether judged from the literary or
typographical point of view, it may j
very properly be called the most j
monumental production from the i
press in recent years. Its value to
the reading public is certainly only
equaled by the encyclopedias and
other works of reference. There
is no book that we Know of that has
received such general and unqualified
approval from the clergy and the
press. As the publisher provides the
work in so many editions there ought
to be no trouble about being suited
either as to bindings or payments.
Two editions are offered at popular
prices, as well as two in a more symp
tous style to suit the more fastidious
b©ok-lovers. The most acceptable
style for the great majority, however,
will undoubtedly be the quarto edi
tion in sixteen parts, bound in stiff
paper covers convenient for easy
handling. This is issued especially
to bring the work within reach of all
classes. As evervone who pretends
to have any kind of a good private
library, no matter how small, must
have the People’s Bible History on
his shelves, our booksellers will
doubtless find a ready sale for it
among the thinking people of our
