DYSPEPSIA MAN’S
GREATEST ENEMY
Explaining the record-breaking
demand for Tanlac, G. F. Willis,
southern representative for L. T.
Cooper, manufacturer of the cele
brated medicine, stated recently
in Atlanta that the thousands of
questions were being asked all
over the south regarding it make
it imperative that some explana
tion be made to satisfy public in
terest.
At this point Mr. Willis quoted
from one of Mr. Coopei’s recent
lectures, in which he said: “Of
all the distressing conditions that
afflict humanity, chronic dyspep
sia is probably the most prevalent.
This most universal malady has
baffled the medical profession for
years, and the most skilled spec
ialists have been unable to cope
with it successfully.
“Hours might be consumed in
describing the sufferings, mental
and physical, of the sufferers of
chronic dyspepsia and their fail
ure heretofore to get relief. A
morbid, unreal, whimsical and
melancholy condition of the mind,
aside from the nervousness and
physical suffering, is the. usual
condition of the average dyspep
tic, and life seems scarcely worth
the living. Dyspepsia, or indi
gestion, as the case mav be, is
caused by the taking of too much
food, or unsuitable food, and the
mucous membrane of the stom
ach becomes irritated, and there
is set an acute or sub-acute gas
tric catarrhal condition which
prevents the proper digestion of
the food. This food is apt to
ferment and decompose, and as a
result the familiar distressing
symptoms of dyspepsia may arise.
In mild cases there is nothing
more than an uncomfortable feel
ing in the stomach, with a cer
tain amount of depression, head
ache, loss of appetite, perhaps
belching of gas and occasional
vomiting. There may be also ac
companying intestinal symptoms,
such as constipation, pains in the
back, colic, etc. There may be
only the familiar heartburn due
to the inflammation of the stom-
aeh from excessive gasses of fer
mentation or putrefaction. In,
the most severe cases—those that
last over a day or two—the symp
toms enumerated may be much
more intense. The distress may
be marked and the general con
stitutional symptom more evi
dent. When this stage is reach
ed the loss of appetite, the men
tal depression and the general
uncomfortable feeling in the
stomach are much more pro
nounced. This is particularly true
in acute gastritis.
“It frequently occurs from con-

tinued errors in diet that this
condition becomes chronic, and
the symptoms persist for an in
definite period; the appetite is
very apt to be varied, although
at times very good. Heartburn
is frequent, if not constant; the
stomach is painful on pressure,
the tongue is coated, there is a
bad taste in the mouth, and there
are changes in the amount of the
salivary secretion. Constipation
is also usually present, although
diarrhoea may alternate.
“Most cases of dyspepsia can
be cured if the diet is properly
looked after and with the proper
treatment. Proper eating and
the proper amount of food are
the most important features in
the treatment. Most people eat
too fast and eat too much.
“One of the most pernicious of
all practices in the treatment of
dyspepsia is the promiscious tak
ing of so many of the so-called
proprietary medicines, which are
so blatantly advertised in the
daily press, many of them being
nothing more than alcoholic bev
erages, and their use is not unat
tended with a great deal of dan
ger. The treatment of constipa
tion that is so frequently an ac
companiment of dyspepsia by
means of patent pills, calomel,
powders and purgatives is posi
tively harmful.
“I am convinced,” continued
Mr. Cooper, “that the stomach
regulates the condition of the
blood and is the fountain head of
health or disease, as the case
may be. My medicine is intend
ed primarily for the regulation
of the stomach and the correc
tion of catarrhal inflammation,
but it is no uncommon thing for
persons who have used it to come
to me and explain that it has re
lieved them of rheumatism and
many ailments not generally
recognized in having their origin
in stomach trouble.”

PLOW HANDLES SEES THE
BEAUTY IN GRIM WINTER
Poets and philosophers have
written and spoken many a sub
lime thing on spring, summer
and autumn and now let's see
what we can get out of grim win
ter. On the 25 of January, 1793,
Robert Burns wrote these words
on taking his morning walk in
the wintry woods:
Sing on, sweet thrush, upon the leafless
bough,
Sing on, sweet bird, I listen to thy
strain.
See aged Winter, mid his surly reign,
At thy blithe carrol clears his furred
brow.
And as I go through the woods
with my maul, wedge and split
ting axe on my shoulder I listen
to hear the sweet notes of a
thrush and try to feel as near
like the great poet as I can while
splitting cord wood. While we
are in the icy embraces of grim
winter there is still a lot of pleas
ure in getting up fire wood and
doing odd jobs about the place
and sitting by a good fire reading
the newspapers and keeping up
on what’s out. There is hardly
anything finer than to roll a few
yellow yam potatoes into the hot
embers, let them roast good and
done, pull them out, blow the
ashes off one and then begin to
ruminate on matters and things.
And O what a delight to know
that these United States are at
peace with the world and all man
kind. Still we sorrow and de
plore the trouble that three-fifths
of the world is in. And we drop
a tear and breath a prayer that a
divine hand may intervene and
we long to see that time spoken
of in Holy Writ that the sword
shall be beaten into plough shares

And again as we peel our po

It takes all sorts of people to
make a world and we are all in
