Compulsory Attendance Bill
AN ACT to require school attendance of children for a minimum period, and to provide for enforcement of
the same, and for other purposes.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State ofGeorgia, that every parent, guardian
or other person having charge and control of a child between the ages of eight and fourteen years, who is not
exempted or excused as hereinafter provided, shall cause the said child to be enrolled in and to attend contin
uously for four months of each yeara public school of the district or of the city or town in which the child
resides; which period of attendance shall commence at the beginning of the first term of said school in the
year. Such attendance at a public school shall not be required where the child attends for the same period
some other school giving instruction in the ordinary branches of English education, or has completed the
fourth grade of school work as prescribed by the State Board of Education, or where, because of poverty, the
services of the child are necessary for the support of a parent or other persons standing in parental relation
to the child are unable to provide the necessary books and clothing for attending school, and the same are not
otherwise provded, or wherie the mental or physical condition of the child renders such attendance imprac
ticable or inexpedient, or where the child resides more than three miles from the school house by the nearest
traveled route, or where, for other good reasons (the sufficiency of which shall be determined by the board
of education of the county or of the city or town in which the child resides) the said board excuses the child
from such attendance, such boards being authorized to take into consideration the reasons for agricultural
labor and the need for such labor, in exercising their discretion as to the time for which children in farming
districts shall be excused. Provided, that no guardian shall be compelled to send such child or children to

Bloodworth in Butts , county. It
will be recalled that he was elected
superintendent of Monroe county
schools in the election last fall, and
that he is to return home to qualify
for this position is of interest here:
Forsyth, Ga., Dec. 16.—Capt. O.
H. B. Bloodworth, Jr., of the Quit
man Guards has been granted a
thirty-day leave of absence and is
now on his way to Forsyth. Capt.
Bloodworth was elected school sup
erintendent at the recent election
and has been granted this leave that
he may return and qualify for this
position. With the rest of the Geor
gia guardsmen he is stationed at El
Paso.

According to Washington reports,
for value of crops have
been broken this year, despite small
er yields. The value of the country’s
leading crops is placed at $7,641,-
209,000, or $1,750,000,000 more
than last year.
The value of the cotton crop is
placed at5465,378’000 more than
last year. The value of last season’s
cotton crop which amounted to
12,862,000 bales, was placed at
$765,800,500, exclusive of seed, ac
cording to Hester. The season be
fore thp crop was worth $593,432,-
828 and $977,844,1 14 for the sea
son of 1913-1914.
