NOTICE TO SUBSCRIBERS
Beginning January 1, 1917, The
Progress-Argus will not be sent to
anybody on credit. The paper will
be strictly cash in advance.
We are forced to pay cash for pa
per, inks, printing materials, rent
and poyrolls and cannot afford to
send the paper on a promise to pay
“in the fall.”
Our paper bill alone will cost
three times more in 1917 than it did
a year ago. The newspapers of the
country are facing the most serious
situation they have ever faced in
their history.
A large number of country week
lies have advanced their subscrip
tion price to $1.50 per year. The
Progress-Argus has kept its sub
scription at the same old price.
Daily Newspapers everywhere have
advanced their subscription price.
Under present conditions we can
not afford to pay cash for all our
materials and send the paper on a
credit. It takes economy of the most
rigid sort to get along at all.
We’d hate to lose a single sub
scriber. If our subscribers will co-
operate with us they can make our
burden lighter, and we will be en
abled to give them a better paper.
If you want to receive the paper
during the next year see that your
subscription is paid. Look at the la
bel on your paper. Unless subscrib
ers renew their paper will be discon
tinued upon date of expiration.
If you are already paid in advance
this notice does not apply to you.
If you are in arrears—and you
can tell by looking at the label—
this means you.
DON’T GO TO LAW; ARBITRATE
The time and money of our farm
ers spent in law suits every year
would . ; ibably keep every farm
house lii the South painted and ev
ery barn whitewashed and therefore
make our whole section look like a
different country. Why can't our
folks, when any disagreement comes
up, simply say: “We’ll arbitrate this.
I’ll pick a man, you’ll pick a man and
Jet these pick a third, and then
we’ll abide by what the three men
decide is just and wise.” Adopt this
plan instead of the law suit plan
and you save money. You also save
time. And what is infinitely more im
portant, you save neighborliness and
good feelings.
Here's a sort of co-operation ev
ery farmer should practice when
ever occasion arises. Especially
should local Unions, farmers’ clubs
and country churches see to it that
all disputes are settled in this way.

WOMEN'S NERVES
Women, more than men, have excitable nerves, because
tiring work and physical strain tax their more delicate
nervous systems and bring premature age and chronic
weakness—unless treated intelligently.
Drug-laden pills and alcoholic concoctions cannot build up a
woman’s strength, but the concentrated medicinal food properties in
a$P build strength from its very source and are helping thousands
Ad?® of women to gain control of their nerve power —overcome
v. w 1 tiredness, nervousness, impatience and irritability.

Christmas Does
Not Stand Alone
If Christmas stood alone it would be
an idie mockery. But it does not stand
alone. It is part of a year. Yet it is a
peculiar part It Is that brief period
in which the child rules the world.
It marks nowadays the culmination
of a civilization which has had a lead
ing principle. The selfish, the hard,
the grasping and the unsparing are
out and apart that one week from the
great flowing tide of the development
of the world's progress. The man or
woman who does not know this or see
it or feel it is alien to the Christian
spirit and to all the products wrought
by the Christ spirit in the twenty cen
turies last past.
Christmas day, then, brings a mes
sage. But it also sings a soug of hope
and calls aloud a prophecy. The mes
sage is that gentleness is stronger far
than force and that the greatest pow
er on earth is the compelling power of
tenderness.
Every Christmas tree is lit with that
light. The great flood of presents bears
this ns its message. The cheer and
charity of the whole season are fed
by this love.
If the result of this process is only
a century flower, however, or one that
blooms even only once a year, then of
what use is this more than that,
this grotesque fact than that stranger
plant? It is a curious phenomenon
only, a hothouse spectacle and not an
abiding food product.—Rev. Dr. David
M. Steele, Philadelphia.

to do any of my housework. After taking three bottles
of Cardui, I began to feel like anew woman. I soon
gained o 5 pounds, and now, I do all my housework
as well as run a big water mill.
