FOOD WILL PLAY BIG
PART IN WINNING WAR
America with the Allies is involv
ed in the greatest war that history
has on record. We Americans have
not been in the thickest of the fight
ing and our country has not been de
vastated like that of the Allies. The
great question of food for our sol
diers and Allies has come before us
and we must meat it with a brave
heart. We must be thrifty and eco
nmical as never before. We cannot
expect our soldiers to win the battle
when they are hungry, for without
food we can do nothing. The Allies
have no one to look to for food ex
cept America, so we have a double
amount of food to supply. The moth
ers, wives and children have been
giving up the brave soldiers with the
thought that all will soon be well and
we shall soon have peace. They have
given nearly all ithe food to the poor,
starving soldiers and now they are
slowly perishing. We must give them

aid. They have heretofore received
the greatest amount of their food
from the now hostile nations. They
hr.ve never been able to produce
enough food to supply their great
need.
It is our own flesh and blood that
is being sacrificed for the great cause
“World Wide Peace.” Our great and
eminent men who were becoming fa
! mous and well known, gave up their
i all and went to fight for our safety
| when the call of the country came,
j The young men of our liberty loving
country gave up their bright pros-
ipects for a prosperous future and
j went to fight for peace. The call of
, their country was greater than ambi
tion. Our men at the front are fight
| ing for us whom they left behind.
; We must not let them go hungry for
then all is lost. We must feed the Al
lies. If Germany conquers then all
will be lost, for we alone cannot win
the victory. We women cannot besol
diers but we can help feed them by
conserving the food and be.ng thrif
ty end economical.
We should save such food for the
soldiers as are easily transported and
furnish more strength and energy <to
them. Some of them are pork, beef,
sugar, flour and fats. They are more
nutritious for hard work than other
foods which are hard to (transport.
We must learn to use the substi
tutes of these foods which are being
worked out by our (thrifty men and
women. They furnish just as much
food value as the foods which we
have been accustomed to eating.
They are better for us than so many
sweets of different kinds We can
learn to like them just as well as the
foods which we must send the sol
diers if we win this war.
We must use the substitutes for
pork and beef which are eggs, cheese,
milk, beans, nuts and peas. They
give us the amount of protein needed
to keep up life. For sugar we can use
syrup, canned fruits, dried fruit, jel
lies, preserves and molasses. We
must use crushed peanuts, commeal,
soy bean meal and velvet bean meal |
for wheat flour. We can also use oat j
meal, rye flour, rice and grits. Our
Allies do not know how to prepare
these foods so we must use them at
home and send our other foods to
them.
