Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Ward, of Cork,
Ga., announce the engagement of
their daughter Rubie, to Mr. Walker
McDade Blackwell, of Milledgeville,
Ga., the date of the marriage to be

the popular bride-elect in Jackson and
Butts county. Miss Ward is a teacher
in the Seventh District A. & M. School
at Powder Springs and is a young wo
man of many lovable traits of char

SERIES OF RECITALS
Of interest to music lovers is the
announcement of a series of Recitals
by the piano pupils of Miss Viola
Slaughter on Wednesday, May Ist.
Miss Kate Lyons, one of the city’s
most gifted pianists, will give a pro
gramme. Miss Lyons will be assisted
by Miss Blanche Johnson, who is fast
becoming recognized as one of the
prettiest players among our student
pianists.
On Wednesday, May Bth, eleven of
the younger members of Miss Slaugh
ter’s class will furnish the programme
and on Tuesday, May 14, the closing
recital of the term will be had.

ENTERTAINS CLUB
The Junior Music Study club was
pleasantly entertained Saturday af
ternoon, by Miss Dorothy Herschell,
of Osborne Place, when an enjoyable
program was rendered by the follow
ing members: Misses Evelyn White,
Roberta Oxford, Louise Beach, Ade
line Turner, Dorothy Herschell, Sid
ney Dillaberry and Mr. H. G. Men
denhall. Miss Margaret Still, a guest
of the club, also contributed several
pleasing numbers. The card given for
the most perfect work was won by
Miss Roberta Oxford. Following the
program those present indulged in an

Parkhurst received the prize. The

AN IMPORTANT MEETING
Twenty-two men were invited to
dinner with the pastor Tuesday, 8
p. m. in the Scout Hall. A full report
of the Building Committee was pre
sented, showing in detail the cost of
our church building. After general
discussion, every man was of the opin
ion that the job be finished this year,
plans were talked and begun toward
the accomplishment of the purpose.
More than half of the debt was sub
scribed at this time.

The Liberty Bond rally held in the j
court house here Wednesday after
noon at 2 o’clock was well attended
and a keener degree of interest was
aroused than has heretqfore been
displayed.
Stirring addresses were delivered
by Hon. J. Q. Nolen, of Atlanta, and
Hon. Sam Rutherford, of Forsyth.
These speakers pointed out in clear
and unmistakable terms Germany’s
war aims, which include the invasion
of America. They showed that it is
the duty, the common every day,
common sense duty, of every citizen
to subscribe to the bond issue and

meeting was opened for subscriptions
and some thirty-five or forty thousand
dollars was raised. This leaves Butts
county a considerable sum yet to
raise, but the committees are going
after the remainder with a detrermi-
nation to get the last dollar —and
more.
Music was furnished by the Jack
son orchestra, which played “Ameri
ca” and The Star Spangled Banner.”
Judge H. M. Fletcher presided and
introduced the speakers.

KNIGHTS TEMPLAR CONFER
DEGREES ON CLASS FIVE
The Red Cross and Knights of Mal
ta degrees were conferred upon five
candidates Tuesday night by Alexius
Commandery, Knights Templar. On
Friday night, May 3, the Order of the
Temple will be conferred. The candi
dates receiving the degrees are
Messrs. T. W. Moore, J. C. Jones, C.
M. Compton, H. M. Moore and El
wood Robison.
Alexius Commandery has much
work ahead and a full attendance of
