DR. MAYS SAYS HE WILL
WORK FOR 3 COMMISSIONERS
To the Voters of Butts County:
I have been requested by a great
many taxpayers to have the general
assembly of Georgia, which convenes
the 27th of next June, pass a bill cre
ating 3 commissioners for Butts
county, whose terms of office to
commence at the expiration of the
present commissioner. To do so I
will have to give the necessary notice
soon. If the bill is passed the candi
dates can be nominated on the 11th
of next September, the day set apart
by law for nomination of governor,
state house officers and members of
the general assembly.
The grand jury recommeded more
than 3, but I think a majority wants
only three, and don’t care to have
road districts, but want the privilege
of nominating them. Many did not
approve the naming of commissioners
in previous bill, and while I don’t ap
prove of it as a rule, I thought the ex
igencies pointed to that course for at
least a limited term of three years.
And it is not so uncommon. Often it
is suggested by conditions, and proves
beneficial and satisfactory.
We have in this county men hold
ing office under appointment. The 3
tax equalizers, a clerk, a penetentiary
warden, a farm demonstrator and
some cow tick eradicators, all drawing
as good ot better salaries than those
men named in the bill would have re
ceived.
In conclusion, I wish to say unless
I am otherwise directed by a mass
meeting, well attended, I will take
pleasure in endeavoring to pass the
bill, and every other matter that a
mass meeting would suggest will have
my attention.
Respectfully,
R. W. MAYS.

PEPPERTON MILLS WILL
NOT SELL ANY COAL
On several occasions The Progress-
Argus has advised citizens of Butts
county to buy their coal early. In
this issue will be found a statement
from the Pepperton Cotton Mills to
the effect that coal will no longer be
handled, except for the benefit of op
erative of the mill. Last season, it
will be recalled, the Pepperton Mills
supplied more coal to the citizens of
the community than any other agen
cy, and had it not been for their lib
eral attitude many people would have
been entirely without fuel.
Notice is also given in this issue by
R. N. & J. P. Etheridge, local dealers,
that orders should be placed at once.
All of thes facts should be suffic
ient warning to consumers to file
their orders early. Failure to do so
will mean not only inconvenience but
suffering in the winter months.
