Of Town

During a recent cold spell
many people on the southeast
part of town were amused to
see Mrs. Geraldine Wright out
plodding along on Nelson
Street on her bicycle with her
husband, Rev. Ben Wright, and
their two children tagging
along behind her in the comfort
of their warm car. It seems
that the bike was a Christmas
gift to Mrs. Wright and she was
making full use of the two
wheel vehicle, not letting the
freezing temperature prevent
her from enjoying a brisk ride
to school .... The news of
peace, after a 12 year war with
Vietnam, was received jubi
lantly last Tuesday night and
Wednesday following Presi
dent Nixon’s brief statement
announcing that a peace
agreement had been signed.
The longest war the U. S. has
been involved in has caused
much grief and many heart
aches for families of service
men and Americans have
breathed a sigh of relief over
the cessation of bombings and
the war’s end Saturday
night .... The death of former
President Lyndon B. Johnson
claimed the life of the sole
surviving United States presi
dent, save for President Nixon.
Mourners by the thousands
filed past the casket to catch a
last glimpse of the former
Chief. His death preceded by
only one day the announcement
of peace with Viet Nam. A 30
day period of flying the official
flag of the United States at half
mast has been announced by
Gov. Jimmy Carter, beginning
last Monday .... The City of
Jackson is sporting an attrac
tive new police car. The light
blue sedan was first noticed by
Jacksonians last week and will
be quite a compliment to the
Police Department’s line of
official vehicles .... WSB
Radio has been recalling the
era of the 50’s when bobbie
socks, skinny ties, short shorts
and baggy pants were hot
items on the market. Such
items recalled thus far have
been clothes, music and the
language with more yet to
come. Announcers have had a
hey day recalling events which
were popular during the ten
year span and many of their
informants say the era of rock
and roll and its accompanying
fads are returning upon the
scene. The jive seems to be
making a comeback also with
the generation of today fast
catching on to phrases that
were so popular during the
middle 50’s .... We are in
debted to Mrs. Morris Williams
for a delicious homemade
coconut cake. The scrump
tiously delicious cake was
quickly eaten at our house with
only a clean cake plate left to
attest to its delicious taste. My
deepest thanks to her for
taking the time to be so
thoughtful .... The contro
versial Equal Rights for
Women bill is being argued pro
and con on television, on radio
and through the newspaper
with the bill yet to be passed or
rejected in the Senate. Should
the bill pass service women
would be integrated into
service with the men, there
would be no separate bathroom
facilities, no separate hospital
rooms, etc. A prime item the
women want is equal payscale
as the men which would place
them in the same working class
as a man on the same type job.
Those against the proposal
generally feel that the woman
now has it made and should be
content with the place she now
holds. Those who argue pro and
con are requesting voters to
write their senator and air
their views to him in order that
he may cast a vote which the
people favor.
