THURSDAY, JANUARY 1, 1976
By Jerry McLaurin
Whiskers, a “from-over
the-fence-dog” makes his
home at the Waits residence
on Stark Road.
Wayne, the Waits’ son,
used to have a pet cat. As
often happens, the cat met
his demise at the hands of a
neighbor’s dog. Wayne’s love
of pets was strong so
Raymond and Blanche
(Wayne’s mother and father)
checked with Virginia Wat
kins at the pet shop and found
that Virginia was looking for
a home for a nine-month-old
puppy Whiskers. Natural
ly Wayne fell for him at first
sight. Since that day things at
the Waits residence have
been jumping.
Whiskers will eat anything
that Wayne eats. At about the
time that he figures supper is
ready, Whiskers pushes the
front door open and enters
the kitchen to find out what is
on the night's menu. Some
one usually asks him if he is
ready for supper (which is
usually like asking the wind
if it is ready to blow) and
Whiskers answers in the
afirmative with a loud,
agreeable bark and then
proceeds to the back door
where he is always fed. At
mealtime, like most other
canines, Whiskers displays
an excellent memory capa
city he never forgets
where and when he is fed.
He would be infinitely
better off if he could
remember as well when he
chases cars. Not long ago
while in hot pursuit of a car,
obviously not knowing what
he would do with it if he
actually caught it, Whiskers
slipped and was hit by the car
suffering a broken leg. For
most any other creature,
“once burned is enough,” but
Whiskers love of the sport
won’t let him rest. Seldom
does a car pass the Waits’
residence without being
given a hot race by Whiskers,
except at mealtimes, of
course.
Wayne and Whiskers have
established a relationship
typical of that between a
canine and his master. They
are together always. Each
weekday morning Whiskers
accompanies Wayne to meet
his school bus and at the end
of each day, Whiskers is
found waiting as Wayne
returns home on the bus from
school.
To most folks, Whiskers is
just a crippled dog, but to
Wayne, Whiskers is a trusted
friend, a constant com
panion, his pride and his joy.
Such is the magic that is
woven between a boy and his
dog.

OBSTACLES TO JOYFUL LIVING
Perhaps you have heard the story of little Jimmy. Little
Jimmy had disobeyed his mother, and she made him sit still
in the kitchen as punishment. Seeking him sulk, his mother
tried to ease the punishment a little. “Jimmy, would you like
some Coke and cookies?” she asked. Quick as a flash came
back the sullen reply. “No! You are only trying to make me
happy and I won’t let you!”
Too often that is the story of life. God trying to help us
enjoy life ans our refusing to allow Him. In Paul’s first lettter
to Timothy, the Apostle expressed a very basic trait of God.
“God,” he wrote, “who generously gives us everything for us
to enjoy.”
Contrary to much popular belief, God’s desire is not to
take the joy out of living but to assist us in enjoying life to the
fullest. With a little cooperation from us, He can fulfill His
desire. What is it which keeps us from really enjoying living?
Well, I would not presume to cover all the causes in the space
allotted me, but I would like to touch on some basics—key
works—which hinder our fulfillment of joy in this life.
The first word is enemies. They are an obstacle to a
joyful life. If it wasn’t for our enemies we could really enjoy
life, couldn’t we? It may be impossible to rid oneself of all his
enemies, but perhaps you can rid yourself of your worse
enemy. And that should lighten the load considerably.
I want you to do a mental exercise with me for a
moment. Think of the worse enemy you have, be it a person or
situation. Call that enemy to mind, picture that enemy in your
mind at this moment. Now I’m going to be a magician. I’m
going to tell you who or what that worse enemy you have is. It
isn’t the enemy you have pictured in your mind at all. You
have a surprise coming. Your worse enemy is none other
than . . . yourself!
You are the greatest hinderance you have, the greatest
enemy you have, when it comes to enjoying life. It is you, and
you alone, that blocks you from a joyful life. It is your wrong
thinking, your negative thinking, your fault-finding thinking
which makes you your own worse enemy. Anacharsis, a
Greek thinker who lived in the 6th century 8.C., wrote:
“Every man is his own chief enemy.” And Cicero said of
Julius Caesar: “He is his own chief enemy.” We usually are.
It was Sir Thomas Browne, the 17th century English
physician and author, who wrote: “Yet is every man his
greatest enemy.”
The only enemy you have which keeps you from
enjoying life is yourself. Jesus said: “Love your neighbor as
yourself.” Our interpretation of that verse of scripture has
been terribly lobsided. It has been on loving other people. We
have nearly totally neglected the whole assumption on which
Jesus based His teaching, and that is that you love yourself.
Why not make your worse enemy your best friend?
Develop yourself into the type of person you would like to be
best friends with. Make yourself the kind of person you can
love. You will be surprised how much it will help you enjoy
everything God has given you.
I We stay alert for unusual trends and I
circumstances. Check first with us!
