KICK-OFF RETURN - Esca Pace carried the ball 24 yards before he was brought down by a
Hogansville defender in the opening kick-off. The Wave drown the Devils 41-8 in Hogansville.
Hogansville s Green Wave
Sinks Jackson Friday Night
By Frank Hearn
Jackson’s football team
made a long trip to
Hogansville last Friday night
and completed an even
longer trip home on the end
of a 41 to 8 score.
Hogansville’s Green Wave,
with a couple of unrelated
fellows named Robinson in
starring roles, demonstrated
to the local Red Devils that
they are indeed worthy of
their number one rating in
class B circles. For three
quarters, the Green machine
sent its stable of fleet backs
over, through, and around
startled and sluggish Devil
defenders. Speed and ag
gressiveness won out over
hesitation and pacification.
Jackson received the open
ing kickoff and came close to
running it back for a score,
one of the few times the
supporters of the Jackson
team had to cheer. Hogans

Death Claims
H. 0. Leverette
Monday Night
Howard Otis Leverette
(affectionately known as
Hike), 63, of Jackson, died
Monday night at the Georgia
Baptist Hospital in Atlanta
after suffering a heart
attack. He had been at
Georgia Baptist a day,
having been transferred
from Sylvan Grove Hospital
where he was a patient for a
week.
Born in Butts County
October 20, 1912, he was son
of the late Otis Eugene
Leverette and the late
Telorah Lee Edwards Leve
rette, both of Butts County.
He was retired from the
International Brotherhood of
Electrical Workers. He was a
member of Indian Springs
Lodge No. 307, F&AM, and
was a veteran of World War
11.
Mr. Leverette is survived
by one sister, Mrs. George
Jones of Atlanta; several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday afternoon at
three o’clock from Haisten’s
Chapel with Rev. Elzie Speir
and Rev. A. L. Price
officiating. Interment was in

Banks who raced virtually
untouched 75 yards. The
point after touchdown (PAT)
was not successful.
The Green Wave scored
next after a drive of 54
yards midway the second
period. Kenny Robinson,
swifty and shifty at his
halfback position, raced the
final 24 yards off his right
side. The PAT again was not
successful and it was still a
ball game at 12 to zero.
The turning point from
which the Devils could not
recover came with only one
second left in the first half.
After a drive of 40 yards in 7
plays, QB Robison of the
“Bad Guys” raced right on a
4 yard keeper, for the score.
A pass for two extra points
was perfect, consequently
the Devils went in at
intermission 20 points down

Beer-Wine Tax
Should Net
County $40,000
Receipts from the local tax
imposed on the sale of beer
and wine in Butts County
netted the County $3,614.60
during the month of July,
according to a report
released today by County
Treasurer Billy Sutton.
The tax is collected at the
wholesale level and remitted
to the County by the four beer
and wine wholesalers who
sell to the 10 retail outlets in
the unincorporated areas of
the County.
Collections are not com
plete for the month of August
but Sutton reported that
preliminary receipts indicate
the County’s revenue from
this source will be compar
able to that of July, or
possibly slightly higher.
When beer and wine sales
were recently authorized in
unincorporated areas, no
estimates of the amount of
revenue that would flow to
the County were made. It
now appears however, that
the County should receive at
least $35,000-to-$45,000 in
come from this source.
Allocations of revenues
raised from the beer and
wine tax are being made, in
equal parts, to the recreation
commission and to pay the
architectural costs of the
proposed new multi-purpose
County building.

With 2:36 into the 3rd
quarter, Kenny Robinson
raced through pitiful tackling
and short grass for 46 yards
and six more points. Another
two point conversion pushed
the lights on the scoreboard
up to 28 to love. In the same
period, Kenny Robinson
(again) took a poor Devil
punt and ran easily through
sloppy tackling and pitty pats
on hip pads for 37 yards down
to two. A guy in a striped
convict shirt was given credit
for stopping the run at the
two. However it was a short
reprieve, for the next play
QB Johnson scored and
completed the conversion to
run it up to 35 points.
Jackson scored on a 37
yard pass play after the
game was out of reach.
Hogansville got another
toward the end to make it a
final defeat 41-8.

THANKS AND
APPRECIATION
I want to express my belated thanks and appreci
ation to the people of Butts County for their loyal sup
port and vote in the August 10th primary. During my

Having served in this capacity for 16 years I am
deeply grateful and appreciative for the support
and confidence you have given me.
I made a host of friends, and this has made my
service a rewarding experience.

GIFT OF GRACE
For by grace are ye saved
through faith,
And that not of yourselves
It is the gift of God.
Ephesians 2:8
How oft do I confess my sins,
dear Lord,
But don’t accept your grace.
It is only by your gift of grace
That I can receive forgiveness
Through faith in the sacrifice
Of your Son.
