Canker Sores,
Fever Blisters
Are Explained
Does it seem like fever
blisters and canker sores
always visit you at the most
awkward times (like for
holiday parties, weddings
and bar mitzvahs?). Not only
are they a nuisance, the pain
is enough to make you want
relief as fast as you can get
it.
Some ways to make you
feel better faster are talked
about in a booklet from the
Department of Health, Edu
cation and Welfare. For a
copy of Canker Sores and
Fever Blisters, send 35 cents
to the Consumer Information
Center, Dept. 39E, Pueblo,
Colorado 81009.
Canker sores are usually
limited to the lining of the
mouth-the inside of the
cheeks and lips, the tongue or
soft palate, and the groove at
the base of the gums.
Although the exact cause of
canker sores hasn’t been
proven, many scientists
believe they are due to an
allergic reaction. Cankers
tend to appear when a person
has gone through some
physical or emotional stress.
A study of a group of
university students revealed
that cankers sores were
more likely to develop during
examination periods than
during vacation.
If left untreated, canker
sores usually heal in 10 to 14
days. The most successful
method of treating them
seems to be, under the care
of a dentist or physician, to
use a tetracycline liquid in
the mouth, held for a few
minutes and then swallowed.
Repeating this several time a
day usually relieves pain in
24 hours and allows complete
healing in five to seven days.
If the condition is very severe
and chronic, other treatment
may be prescribed.
Fever blisters (herpes
simplex viral infection)
generally appear at the
outside edge of the lip, but
may also form at the edge of
the nostril. They often follow
lowered physical resistance;
an illness, particularly upper
respiratory infection;
trauma; or emotional stress.
They are also associated with
temperature increases from
illness or too much sun. This
disease tends to run in
certain families and probab
ly has some hereditary
component.
Treatment of fever blisters
can include local anesthetics
to relieve pain, antibiotics
and ointments. Fortunately,
the sores seldom scar and
usually heal by themselves in
a week or two.

Procedure For
Boosting Dead
Battery Given
Severe damage to the face
and eyes resulting from
explosions of auto batteries is
a growing concern to
ophthalmologist (physicians
specializing in the treatment
and care of the human eye),
who have noted a nationwide
increase of such injuries.
These unusual accidents
often happen to persons
using jumper cables to try to
start cars that have dead
batteries, a more common
occurrence during the colder
weather.
Hydrogen escaping from a
battery can be ignited by a
spark created when the
jumper cables are attached
or removed, and the explo
sion may result in serious eye
injuries—even blindness,
these specialists report.
cheese, shredded
2 cups plain flour
*'4 cup margarine
2' j tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
Combine cheese, mix and
cut with a fork until mixture
is like coarse meal. Mix
flour, regular salt, and Vz cup
of the cheese mixture with
the margarine. Blend well,
cutting with a knife. Stir in 1
well-beaten egg and the milk.
Chill dough for 1 hour. Roll
dough out on a floured board
to 1 t-inch thickness.. Cut into
pieces measuring 4 x Vi
inches and roll into strips.
Twist two strips around each
other and fasten ends by
brushing with beaten egg.
Mix together remaining
cheese mixture, poppy seeds,
and coarse salt. Sprinkle
over cheese twists. Bake in a
375 degree oven for about 15
minutes, or until golden.
Makes about 3 dozen cheese
twists.

*4 teaspoon ginger
1 pound pecan halves
In small saucepan, melt
margarine; stir in sugar and

over pecans in large roasting
pan and mix well to coat.
Bake at 275 degrees for
approximately 30 minutes,
stirring several times during
baking. Cool, Store in an
airtight container.
SOY ALMONDS
IV4 pounds (4 cups) blanched
almonds
V\ cup soy sauce
V 4 cup margarine
Put almonds in 13 x 9 x
2-inch pan and toast in a 400
degree oven for about 15
minutes, stirring several
times. Add melted marga
rine and soy sauce (mixed
together) and stir. Toast,
stirring often, 12 to 15
minutes longer or until nuts
are coated and fairly dry.
Cool and store in an airtight
container.
If the following steps
(taken from consumer infor
mation published by the
United States General Serv
ices Administration) are
followed, the chances of a
battery exploding or there
being damage to an auto’s
electrical system will be
reduced to a minimum.
BEFORE CONNECTING
JUMPER CABLES
1. Make sure when parking
the assisting auto that the
two vehicles don not touch.
2 Check the dead battery to
see that the electrolyte
solution is not frozen. If so,
wait until it thaws before
attempting to use the jumper
cables.
3. Check to see that both the
booster battery and the dead
battery are of the same
voltage (6 or 12 volts).
4. Turn all accessory
sw itches and the ignition key
for the stalled vehicle to the
OFF position. Also place
gear shift or gear selector in
neutral or park position.
5. Remove cell vent caps
from both the booster battery
and the dead battery, which
will allow any accumulated
gases to escape. Cover cell
vents with a cloth.
TO START CAR
1. Find the terminal on the
dead battery which is
connected to the starter
switch or solennoid. See if
terminal is marked positive
(+) or negative (-). Then clip
one end of a jumper cable to
the terminal (check mark
ing) of the booster battery.
2. Now clip the other end of
that jumper cable to the
terminal of the dead battery
identified above.
3. Then clip one end of the
second jumper cable to the
other terminal of the booster
battery. The other end of this
cable should be fastened
securely to the bumper or
engine block of the vehicle
with the dead battery. This
connection should be at least
twelve (12) inches from the
dead battery, so that any
sparks which occur will be
well away from the danger
zone.
4. Now you are ready to
attempt start the car. After it
starts and is running normal
ly restore the cell vent caps
on both batteries.
5. First; remove the ground
connection from the bumper
or engine block of the car
being assisted. Then remove
the end of the other cable for
the dead battery. Finally,
remove the cables from the
battery of the assisting
vehicle.
