RUTH ANN MITCHELL AND BUDDY
Several of the merchants
at downtown businesses are
probably by now accustomed
to seeing a big gray dog
making stops at their stores
to implore about a possible
meal. And usually he will get
that meal; the store owners
will attest to that fact.
The dog’s name is Buddy,
and his breed is a Wei
maraner which means he is
from the Weimar district in
Germany. Buddy belongs to
Ruth Ann, Adel, and Packy
Mitchell, the children of Dr.
and Mrs. William Mitchell,
Jr. of Jackson. Dr. Mitchell
is Jackson’s only veterinar
ian.
The Mitchells used to let
Buddy stay at Dr. Mitchell’s
office a lot, but due to the fact
that he started checking out
fhe local cuisine frequently,
he has had to remain at home
much of the time.
Buddy is “extremely”
intelligent and prefers to set
his own routine about how
and when things should be
done, an example being that
he visits the places where he
gets his free meals on a
regular, clockwork pattern.
Buddy is a little over a year
old and is a good hunting dog.
His breed was originally
intended to hunt primarily
for deer, but its hunting
capabilities are not that
limited.
Though he now only
understands the direction to
“sit,” Ruth Ann Mitchell said
she is giving Buddy obed
ience lessons. She added that
he recently won two ribbons
—one for obedience and one
for being the biggest dog - at
a dog show sponsored by the
4-H Club at the county fair.
Buddy also won a trophy for
being the best dog in his
group at the fair.

Dear Santa,
I have tried to be good this
year but there is just so much
stuff a one year old can get
into. I have really kept my
mama, daddy, and big sister
busy picking me up when I
climb on things and fall. I
really don’t have time to play
with toys cause I’m always
busy thinking of what I can
get into next -but please see
if you can find something in
your sack for me. I’ll be
better next year when my
new baby brother or sister
comes.
Love Danny

Xmas Lights
Small User 01
Electricity
by Susan Millsap
Home Economist
Georgia Power
Decorative lights use only
a small amount of electricity,
so there is no reason not to
include them in your holiday
celebrating.
It’s a good idea, however,
to keep lighting displays
simple and burn them no
more than five hours a night.
Remember to turn them off
before retiring for the night
and leaving home for the
evening.
Midget or Italian bulbs use
less electricity than tradi
tional size bulbs. It would
take more than 250 midget
bulbs to use as much
electricity as a 100-watt bulb.
Cool type bulbs use less
electricity than standard
bulbs, and lights that flash on
and off use less than lights
that burn continuously.
For safety’s sake, check all
lighting sets for frayed wires,
loose connections and broken
sockets before you use them.
Dispose of defective sets;
don’t try to patch them.
Always select lighting sets
that carry the Underwriters’
Laboratories (UL) Label.
Some lighting equipment is
designed for indoor use only.
Be sure all plugs, sockets,
and bulbs that you intend to
use outside are weather
proof. Keep connections off
the ground, and, to insure a
watertight connection, use
the rubber ring or gasket that
comes with outdoor sockets.
Never place electric lights
on a metal tree. A revolving
color wheel or a floodlight
beam directed on the tree
may be used as an
alternative. Follow the man
ufacturer’s instructions
when lighting any artificial
tree.
If you use a real tree, be
sure its freshly cut and keep
it in water so the needles
don’t dry out, creating a fire
hazard.
The tree and all lighting
cords should be placed out of
house traffic areas.
