Increase in Admissions Is
Recorded at Sylvan Grove
By
Dale Whiten
During Sylvan Grove Hos
pital’s last fiscal year - Oct.
1, 1975-Sept. 30, 1976 - there
have been 731 admissions for
an average of 14 patients
admitted per day.
Those figures represented
a slight increase in admis
sions over the previous fiscal
year. The occupancy rate,
figured by the number of
patients per available bed,
also showed a slight increase
to 39.67 per cent for the same
period.
However, hospital admini
strator Jim Shaw said the
hospital continued to operate
at a deficit last year but that
the final figures are not yet
available.
A breakdown of patients
admitted showed there were
275 private patients, 290
Medicare patients, 89 Medi
caid patients.
In addition, there were 77
clinic, or obstetric, patients
whose cases were actually
handled through the Butts
County Health Department.
Ninety-two babies were born
at Sylvan Grove last year, an
increase of 13 births over
1974-75.
Sylvan Grove employs a
total of 49 people which
includes four registered
nurses, 10 licensed practical
nurses (LPN), and 18 nurses
aides and orderlies.
Other staff personnel in
clude five persons in the
administrative department,
eight in the dietary, three in
lab and x-rays, and four in
housekeeping and mainte
nance.
The hospital bi-weekly
payroll comes to a total of
8400 expendable dollars, and
the size of the staff and the
payroll it receives is depend
ent on the number of
patients.
Sylvan Grove is served by
two physicians, Drs. James
Howell and Jack Newman,
both of Jackson. In addition
there are presently nine

Although America is commonly regarded as a melting pot,
many American traditions and customs have a distinct ethnic
and regional flavor. A look at our Christmas traditions is proof
of this distinctiveness.
In the days of the Puritans, a person greeting a passerby with
the salutation, “Merry Christ-
mas”, was awarded a five dol
lar fine for his gesture. These
settlers were bound by a law
passed In 1659 prohibiting the
celebration of Christmas. In
fact, this ban continued until
the 1800’s, when the Episcopal
Sunday Schools in New Eng
land began observing the holi
day. Around this time, the
early Irish immigrants, settl
ing in Boston, transplanted
their custom of placing a
lighted candle in the window.
This act symbolically lights the
way for the Christ child.
French settlers in the South
ern portions of the United
States ushered in the holiday
by the use of fireworks, fire
arms, and anything else that
would make loud noises. This
custom is still observed in some
rural communities.
The preparation of large
meals, a main part of Christ
mas on a Southern plantation,
is now a universally honored
custom. Traditional dinners
of turkey, ham, or goose, gar
nished with desserts of pies,
cakes, and cookies, are still
gastronomical delights. If you
had been part of George
Washington’s circle of family
and friends, you would have
been treated to Martha Wash
ington’s Christmas cake,

ients, called for the use of 40

rotating resident doctors who
come to Jackson throughout
the week from Atlanta to
complement the services of
Drs. Howell and Newman.
These fully-licensed phy
sicians are on duty at Sylvan
Grove from 5:30 - 11:00 p.m.
Monday through Friday, and
continuously from 2 p.m. -11
p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Shaw said the resident
doctors used to come only on
weekends, but in the four
years that he has been there,
the full-time residency was
begun.
He added that probably the
hospital’s biggest need is to
get more permanent physi
cians for Butts County.
“One of the major prob
lems in attracting more
doctors to the county is the
unavailability of office
space, and if we can get more
office space, I think we’ll see
more doctors coming here,”
Shaw said.
Even though the last fiscal
year was the best since Shaw
became hospital administra
tor four years ago, the low
patient level continues to
necessitate a limited operat
ing budget.
The hospital has a total of
28 beds, but during the last
two years, the occupancy
level has not reached 50
percent.
the operating costs at
Sylvan Grove depend mainly
on private payments, but
every month the county
contributes a check to help
cover the cost of operations.
In addition federal money is
received from the Medicare
and Medicaid programs.
This money is paid only to
insure those patients who
qualify for those programs,
and each bill is paid per
individual patient or per
recipient of the programs.
Living Longer
Americans bom this bi
centennial year can expect
to live twice as long as those
bom around 1776. Current
life expectancy at birth is 72
years.
Ironically, the Christmas
tree, today a pivotal yuletide
tradition, was brought to this
country by enemy forces dur
ing the American Revolution.
Hessian soldiers, paid adver
saries of the colonists, intro
duced this custom.
The German immigrants
brought with them the beauti
ful tradition .of the hgnleu
Christmas tree. It is said that
the first lighted tree was a
contribution made by Martin
Luther, who, after taking a
walk in a near-by forest before
Christmas, placed candles on
an evergreen to recapture the
stars he saw shining through
the branches of the trees.
Decorations for Christmas
trees in the early Republic
were usually candles, and or
naments fashioned from bits
and pieces of materials found
in the home. Brightly colored
paper chains, walnuts, and
popcorn strings were popular
additions to the tree.
In the 20th century, candles
were gradually replaced by
electric light strings. Under
writers Laboratories, an elec
trical testing organization
gaining momentum at the
time, recognized this trend.
In the early 1920’s UL intro
duced a Christmas light test
ing program designed to re
duce the possibility of fire or
shijck.

An early tradition in

“liturgical” churches strive
to “re-live” these important

“Advent” means “Com

year recalls and relives that
long time of hope and faith,
when the People of God
looked forward to and hoped
for the coming of the

we appreciate the coming of

we looked forward to it with
the same sentiments as the
