Colder Weather Will Bring
Higher Power Costs for Most
An unseasonably cold
November will mean higher
than usual electric bills for
many Georgians, according
to George W. Edwards, Jr.,
director of the Georgia
Power Company’s public
information department.
Edwards, explained the
amount of energy needed to
heat a home increases as the
temperature drops even
when the thermostat setting
remains unchanged. “The
colder the outside tempera
ture, the harder the system
must work to bring the inside
air up to the desired
temperature,” he said,
adding that in cold weather
such heat producing appli
ances as water heater also
require more energy to do
their jobs effectively.
Edwards said even homes
that do not have electric
heating systems tend to use
more electricity on cold
days.
The utility company uses
the National Weather Ser
vice’s degree day system to
compute heating or cooling
requirements for a given
period, the company spokes
man noted. In winter, he
said, the difference between
65 degrees and the average
daily temperature is the
number of heating degree
days for that day. The
National Weather Service
uses 65 degrees as a base
because little or no comfort
conditioning is required on a
day in which the average
temperature is 65 degrees.
“If, for example, the
average temperature one
day was 20 degrees, the
number of degree days for
that day would be 65 minus 20
or 45 degrees days,” Ed
wards continued.
In all areas of the state, the
number of heating degree
days for the billing period
Oct. 28 through Nov. 30 was
more than one and a half

times the number for the
corresponding period in 1975.
In North Georgia, the
number of heating degree
days for that period was
more than three times the
number for the previous
billing cycle. In Central
Georgia it was more than
four and a half times the
number for the preceding
billing period. Figures for
South Georgia show the
heating degree days for that
same 34-day period more
than three and a half times
the number for the previous
billing cycle.
“The degree day measure
ment is one of several factors
that affect a customer’s bill
from month to month,”
Edwards said, noting that the
fuel adjustment charge also
can make a significant
difference in the size of the
bill.
He explained that because
several unanticipated factors
have required the company
to burn more higher cost
fuels, bills received in
December will reflect a
higher fuel-adjustment
charge than was shown on
November bills. The Decem
ber fuel-adjustment charge
will be $11.45 per thousand
kilowatt-hours as compared
to the $8.31 per thousand
kilowatt-hours charged on
November bills.
“Although some of the
factors that determine the
size of customers’ bills are
not within the customers’
control, consumers still can
keep winter bills at a
minimum by keeping the
thermostat at 68 degrees
during the day and setting it
back a few degrees at night,
keeping doors and windows
tightly closed as much as
possible and using all
appliances efficiently,” Ed
wards said,.

Do you ever get tired of the
same old salad dressing? I
have, but recently a friend
from Chamblee prepared
this very different and very
good dressing-Cashin’s
Sweet & Sour Dressing. It has
a zesty flavor and this recipe
makes a huge amount, so it
might-be a good idea to cut
the recipe in half. This recipe
is from the file of Ms. Diane

HIGHLIGHTS
It’s Nationial Championship time in the Rose Bowl! For the first time that we can re
member, our national champion will be decided January Ist when top-ranked Michigan bat
tles second-ranked Southern California. It will be the Wolverines' power quotient of 115 9
versus the Trojans’ 112.3. In the Sugar Bowl, Georgia #3, will be a slim 6-point favorite
over undefeated Pittsburgh, ranked fourth.
We checked our Top Twenty at the conclusion of the 1975 season and found that six
teams are among the missing in our final ratings this year. However, of the six, five of
them have been in our elite group at some time during the season. Only Arizona State,
with one of its poorest seasons in years, did not appear in our ratings during the 1976
season.
The most improved major college football in 1976 are Houston and Western
Michigan. The amazing Cougars, coming back from a two and eight season in 1975, really
hit the jack-pot. They won the Southwest Conference plus the host spot in the Cotton
Bowl ... a real turn-around! The Broncos of Western Michigan, one and ten in '75,
jumped to a seven and four record in '76 and finished fourth in the Mid-American
Conference.
For the first time in twenty years, the final forecasting average took a bit of a skid
We're down over two points from last year's average of .760, finishing with a season's
percentage of .736. We've picked the results of 2,145 football games, hitting on 1552
and missing on 557. There were 36 ties.
When we list our selected teams as the top teams, we are rating the twenty
STRONGEST teams in the country, not necessarily the twenty teams with the best
won-lost records. A team’s rating is based on the average of its performance against
all opponents throughout the entire season, and calibre of competition is a major
factor in determining a team's rating.
The big movers in the conference ratings: the Pac 8 moved from fifth to third place
and the Southern Conference jumped all the way from 13th in '75 to ninth place.
Ratings for football conferences are based on each league's power quotient average
determined from the ratings of all teams in every conference. Of the more than 65
football conferences, here are the twenty strongest in the nation:
1— Big Eight Conference 98.41
2 Southeast Conference 93.86
3 Pacific Eight Conference 90.93
4 Big Ten Conference 90.44
5 Southwest Conference 88.00
6 Atlantic Coast Conference 83.57
7 Western Athletic Conference ...... 78.21
8— Southland Conference 71.53
9 Southern Conference 71.49
10— Pacific Coast Athletic Conference .. 71.10
