Seedling Trees
Now Available
For Planting
The lifting and shipment of
the Georgia Forestry Com
mission’s 1976 tree seedling
crop is underway, announces
Ray Shirley, director,
Georgia Forestry Commis
sion.
Shirley pointed out that
excellent planting conditions
exist throughout the state.
The rains of the past several
weeks have brought about
the excellent conditions.
The Forestry 1 Commission
has only four million tree
seedlings left for sale to
Georgia landowners. The
initial crop was 42.8 million
trees, Shirley added.
Shirley stated that improv
ed slash pine seedlings
constitute more than 75
percent of the remaining
trees. The cost per thousand
is $9.
He also announced an
abundance of eastern white
pine, Virginia pine, red cedar
and yellow poplar. The cost
per thousand is Virginia pine,
$9; eastern white pine and
yellow poplar, sls; and red
cedar, S2O. Others are
catalpa and sweet gum, sls
per thousand trees.

nation’s race tracks during the year.
December 18, 1787-New Jersey ratifies the proposed
Constitution of the United States in an unanimous vote.
December 19, 1946-War breaks out in Indochina as
troops under Nationalist leader Ho Chi Minh launch
widespread attacks and begin an assault on the French
garrison at Hanoi.
December 20, 1820-The state of Missouri levies a tax
against bachelors. The statute orders unmarried men be
tween the ages of 21 and 50 to pay a tax of a dollar a year.
December 21, 1944-Horse Racing is banned in the
United States for the duration of World War 11.
December 22, 1963-The nation’s month of official
mourning for President John F. Kennedy ends.
December 23, 1928-The National Broadcasting Com
pany establishes a permanent coast-to-coast radio network.

Geise Potts
Is Buried
At Stark
Funeral services for Alton
Geise Potts, prominent local
merchant, were held Friday
afternoon at 2 o’clock from
the chapel of Haisten
Funeral Home. The Rev.
Charles Risher, Rev. Phil
DeMore and Rev. David
Black officiated and inter
ment was in the Stark United
Methodist Church cemetery.
Mr. Potts was a native of
Newton County, son of the
late John M. Potts and the
late Bessie Vaughn Potts.
For many years, Mr. Potts
had operated the J. M. Potts
& Son Grocery and General
Merchandise Company in
Newton County.
Death came to the popular
merchant at his home
Wednesday morning, follow
ing a lengthy illness.
Mr. Potts was a member of
the Gplden Fleece Lodge No.
6, F. & A.M. in Covington and
of the Stark United Methodist
Church. *He served his
country during World War II
in the military service.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Annie Lou Wyatt Potts,
of Jackson; two daughters,
Miss Lucy Annise Potts and
Mrs. R. L. Barnes, both of
Jackson; son, Alton W. Potts,
of Mobile, Alabama;
Three sisters, Mrs. W. B.
Burnham, of McDonough;
Mrs. S. A. Washington, of
Jackson, and Mrs. Carter S.
Rose, of Marietta; two
brothers, R. M. Potts and H.
B. Potts, of Covington;
brother-in-law, T. S. Gran
ger, of Covington, several
nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers
were Stanley Washington,
Alan Palmer, Charles Burn
ham, Stanley McCart, John
ny Potts and Howard
Skelton.
Haisten Funeral Home was
in charge of final arrange
ments.
