Butts Special
Olympics Be
Held Friday
The Butts County Special
Olympics Field and Track
Competition is scheduled for
Friday, April 1. The event
begins with a parade at 10:30
A.M. on the Henderson
Junior High Football Field.
The 50 yard dash, the 100
yard dash, 440 relay, softball
throw and standing long
jump will follow between 11
and 1 o’clock. Parents and
interested community mem
bers are urged to be present
to enjoy and encourage the
participants along.
Special Olympics is truly a
community sponsored affair.
The teachers at Jackson
Primary School, Henderson
Elementary and Junior High
schools, Mulberry Street
School and Butts County Day
Training Center, doubling as
coaches, and their students
may enter as many events as
he-she feels ready to do.
The Junior High School
principal and coaches have
cleared the field for the day.
The president of the Butts
Association for Retarded
Citizens has a committee
laying off the field. The
Jackson High School
Co-Ed-Y and Key Club
members are working as
heat starters and score
keepers. The Jaycees are
furnishing the ribbons and
T-shirts. The lunchroom
director and the Jackson
High School home economics
girls are planning special
surprises for the 1 o’clock
luncheon. The Henderson
Junior High Band is leading
the parade and furnishing
music for entertainment.
Fourteen of the local
participants will be selected
to enter district competition
at Lakewood Stadium on
April 23. Butts County
students have already par
ticipated in volleyball and
Run Dribble and Shoot
competition. The Mulberry
Street School team are
state champions in volleyball
for thftjaia.-and under age
group.
Butts 4-H’ers
Win Honors In
District Meet
Thirty-nine fifth and sixth
grade 4-H’ers participated in
the annual District Project
Achievement held at Rock
Eagle recently. Butts County
winners competed against
other 4-H’ers from 17 other
Central Georgia Counties.
District Winners from
Butts County were Laura
Thaxton, recreation;
Frankie Carter, plants and
soil science; Kim Presley,
home furnishings and art and
Randy Merideth, bicycle.
Second place winners were
Janet English, Karla Caven
dar, James Evans and Don
Fletcher. Third place win
ners wefe Wendy Lowery,
Danny Rodriquez, Louis
Williams, Eric Stewart and
Raymond Utter.
Other Butts County 4-H’ers
attending were: Patrina
Greer, Gidget tlpshaw, Mi
chelle Shannon, LaTouche
Shivers, Kini Lowery,
Advienne Colbert, Phyllis
Jenkins, Rosie Head, Alice
McDowell, Deborah Nas
worthy, Sonya Evans, Lisa
Kilgo, Mary Lynn Palmer,
Cherece Nutt, Tracy Mills
and. Dawn Spivey. Also
attending were Eric Spivey,
Jerome Moore, George
Green, Cary Hurst, Anthony
Lawson, Mike Stewart,
James Thurston, Mike Gay
and Jim Price.
Miss Patricia Smith and
Milliard Daniel from the
Butts Cos. Extension Office
accompanied the group to
Rock Eagle and report that
the 4-H’ers represented Butts
County well. Jan Thaxton
also accompanied the group
as a leader.
