A Gardening and Food
Preservation program will
be presented by the Butts
County Extension Service at
7:30 P.M. on Thursday, May
12th, at The Central Georgia
EMC auditorium.
Butts County Extension
Agents, Miss Patricia Smith
and Millard Daniel, will be in
charge of the program and
invite all interested persons
to attend.
The program will afford
gardeners an opportunity to
learn more about the control
and prevention of common
disease and insect problems
before they threaten the
garden. Tips will also be
given on what to do after the
harvest in home canning,
freezing and drying of foods
before the gardener finds
himself with a kitchen full of
mature fruits and vege
tables.
There is no admission
charge for the meeting
and further information may
be obtained by calling the
Butts County Extension
Office at 775-2601.

Rev. and Mrs. R. W.
Jenkins of Moultrie were
visiting back in the com
munity Wednesday after
noon. They attended prayer
services at Macedonia
Church last Wednesday night
and spent the night with Mr.
Harold Standard, then went
to Atlanta Thursday morn
ing.
Mrs. Taylor Foster sus
tained a broken hip in a fall
at her home, on the Biles
Road, last Tuesday. She was
carried to Griffin Hospital
where she was treated and
will be confined for several
days. Friends hope she will
have a speedy recovery.
Mr. and Mrs. Horace
Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. C. B.
Biles, Mrs. Bessie Duke and
Mrs. J. W. Collier visited
Wednesday with Mr. Ray
mond Biles at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Tierce, and
Mr. Teirce in Atlanta.
Rev. and Mrs. Bob Thur
mon and children, Robby,
Kerry and Donny of St.
Louis, Mo. were weekend
guests of Mr. and Mrs. Don
Thurmon. Rev. Thurmon is a
brother of Don and is a
minister of youth at Long
view Church in St. Louis. He
sang a beautiful solo at the
morning worship service at
Macedonia.
Andy Crumbley has been
admitted to West Paces
Ferry Hospital in Atlanta
and was scheduled to
undergo major surgery Mon
day, May 2nd. His many
friends hope he will be able to
return home at an early date.
Mrs. Robert Reese and
Mrs. Willis McClure spent
Saturday with Mr. and Mrs.
Eddie Reese and Stacy in
Conley and went shopping at
one of the shopping centers
on Saturday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hardy
of Forest Park visited Mr.
Hardy’s mother, Mrs. Emma
Hardy, on Saturday.
Mrs. James B. Williamson
of Macon and Joe Williamson
from the University of
Georgia at Athens were
guests Saturday of Mrs.
Lilliam Williamson.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd
Bradley and daughter Shara
Kay and granddaughter
Michele Still of Atlanta were
weekend guests of Mr. and
Mrs. C. L. Bradley.
The condition of Harold
Cawthon has grown worse in
the past few days. Harold,
the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. H.
Cawthon, was seriously in
jured in a car-motorcycle
collision several weeks ago
and has been a patient in the
Georgia Baptist Hospital
since that time. The many
friends of the family hope for
favorable news of his
condition within the next few
days.
Mr John Cook returned to
•Sylvan Grove Hospital last
weekend for further treat
ment, having spent several
days at home after a week’s
stay in the hospital.
The children and grand
children of Mr. and Mrs. F.
H. Morgan observed Mot
her’s Day a week in advance
and spent Sunday with Mr.
and Mrs. Morgan. Some
members of the family were
unable to be present on next
Sunday. At the noon hour a
bounteous and delicious meal
was enjoyed by every one
present. These included Mr.

hopes for her an early
recovery.

with the Home Mission
Board, was guest minister at
Macedonia for both the
morning and evening ser
vices Sunday. Rev. Maxie
Threatt, newly elected past
or, will assume the pastorate
on Sunday, May Bth. His
family will be moving here
on Friday

of Jackson was guest for the
weekend of Mrs Annie
Taylor.
Mr. and Mrs. Donnie
Thaxton announce the birth
of a,daughter on Thursday,
Apfil 28, at Georgia Baptist
Hospital. The little girl who
has been named Tiffany
Nicole, is the granddaughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Max
Redman; paternal grand
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur
Thaxton; and great grand
daughter of Rev. T.J.
Thaxton and the late Mrs.
Thaxton. Both mother and
baby are fine and are
presently with Mr. and Mrs.
Redman for a few days.
Miss Lunette Kitchens of
Atlanta visited her sister,
Mrs. Madge Holifield, during
the weekend.
Mrs. W. B. McDaniel of
Atlanta, Mrs. Ina Cawthon of
Westbury Nursing Home and
Mr. Harold Standard were
dinner guests Tuesday of Mr.
and Mrs. Jim McMichael.
Mr. Bob McGinnis was
admitted Sunday to Pied
mont Hospital. He is quite ill
and his friends hope for an
early improvement in his
condition.
Mrs. Emerson McMichael

were shopping in Atlanta on
Friday.

from 10:00 a.m. to 1 p.m.

the Social Security office,
however, are advised to call

Security business can be

phone. The Griffin office is
open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30

Electric Rates
For Residences
Among Lowest
Electric bills for Butts
county customer of Georgia
Power Company remain
among the lowest in the
nation, local manager Jim
my Brooks reported this
week.
Citing figures from a
March nationwide survey , of
power companies, he said
Georgia Power ranks 53rd of
60 companies surveyed in the
price charged residential
electric customers. The
previous survey, made in
December by the Jackson
ville (Fla.) Electric Author
ity, placed the Georgia utility
in 51st place.
According to the survey,
the March bill for Georgia
Power customers using 1,000
kilowatt-hours (kwh) of
electricity was $32.37, includ
ing fuel adjustment costs.
New York’s Consolidated
Edison again topped the list
with a 1,000-kwh cost of
$75.35, followed by Phila
delphia Electric Company,
with $50.26 and Public
Service Electric and Gas of
New Jersey with $49.59. Vero
Beach, Fla., a municipally
owned system, was fourth
highest with $48.68.
The Jacksonville Electric
Authority is a municipally
owned electric utility which
generates and delivers elec
tricity to its own customers.
Its periodic surveys of
electric costs include both
investor-owned and publicly
owned utilities.
Kiwanis Hears
4-H District
Champions
Jackson Kiwanians were
entertained at their meeting
April 26th by two District 4-H
Club winners who gave
demonstrations of their win
ning techniques.
Kim Presley, winner of the
Home Furnishing and Art
competition at the Rock
Eagle encampment, gave a
demonstration on Needle
point that proved her artistry
in this field. She is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Tommy Presley.
Laura Thaxton, winner of
the Leisure Recreation divi
sion at Rock Eagle, gave a
demonstration in square
dance calling that had the
Kiwanians toe tapping. She is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Ray Thaxton.
The two winners are
members of the Butts County
Cloverleaf 4-H Club, which is
open to fifth and sixth grade
students.
Kenneth Welch, chairman
of the Club’s Agriculture
and Conservation commit
tee, arranged the program
and presented Butts County
Agent Millard Daniel, who
complimented the Kiwanis
Club for its continuing
support of the 4-H Club
movement. He then intro
duced the Butts County
Home Economist Patricia
Smith, who presented the two
District 4-H winners.

anew member and Ed
Storey, as a visitor.

Local Youth
Is Winner Of
Bible Quiz
Five teens from Georgia
recently participated in an
exciting two days of Bible
quizzing at Trevecca ftaza
rene College in Nashville,
Tenn., winning first place in
the tough competition.
Other states with teams
competing included Kentuc
ky, Tennessee, Mississippi,
Alabama, North and South
Carolina, East Tennessee,
North, South and Central
Florida.
Edward Ray Savage, 11, a
ninth grade student at
Jackson High School, won
first place and Karen Agner
of Toccoa won the number
two position for Georgia at
the Nashville quiz. The state
team, coached by Mrs.
Shirley Faircloth of Augusta,
was selected after seven
months of intensive Bible
study and quiz competition
among Nazarene churches
within the state. Other team
members included Denzie
and Carla Terrell and Buddy
Hash, all of Covington.
Not only did the Georgia
team win first place honors,
they also had the distinction
of being the only state which
placed two teens on the
Regional team. Each region
al team member received
several trophies as well as a
scholarship award to be used
toward attendance at Tre
vecca Nazarene College.
Each of the Georgia team
members won several
awards for being the Number
I team at the quiz.

Savage, Sr. of Jackson.
