OLD NEW YORK STORE —This picture taken long before Jackson’s streets were
paved and stores were modernized shows the New York Store, now known as
Etheridge-Smith Cos., when that building was just one story. Note the wooden sidewalks,
the horse and buggy, the hitching posts and the canopies over the sidewalks at some store

A COMPARISON
Rev. Lamar Guyton
Pleasant Grove Church
Living for Christ is a lot
like playing golf. For
example, it is something that
gets into one’s blood. You
know about the foursome
who were putting on the 18th
green when suddenly a ball
hit, the green right at their
feet. Looking back up the
fairway they saw this guy
driving his cart toward them
at top speed. As he got off and
staggered toward his ball
with putter in hand, he asked,
“could I play through
fellows? I got snakebit on 13,
but, I think I can make it if I
hurry!” That’s extreme I
know, but one must get this
Christian living “in his
blood” if he intends to make
it through. On any given day,
one of the most frequented
placed in Butts County is the
Deer Trail Golf Club. That is
not all Bad. In this

Your physician may in

terramycin in the treatment
of a disease. Just what is
terramycin? Simply, ter
ramycin is an antibiotic
which is used in treatment of
a wide variety of infections
and diseases.
Terramycin is usually very
effective in the treatment of
certain virus infections,
pneumonia, strep throat and
many other infections. Ter
ramycin is widely used
because of the success of the
drug and the fact that it very
seldom causes any allergic
reaction.
Terramycin was developed
after World War II by a team
of American research scien
tists following a great deal of
research in the antibiotic
field.
Terramycin is now con
sidered as one of our older,
tried and proven drugs. But,
extensive research is going
on daily throughout the world
to develop new and better
drugs for use in treating the
diseases which plague man
kind. New drugs are thor

comparison I trust that you
will be able to see the
spiritual emphasis, and that
it will also challenge your
heart for Christ.
Every golf course has
hazards of sand, water and
“rough.” No one lives here
easy without going through
or around many hazards.
There are dangers of
temptation, problems in
volved with human relations,
and battles with the world
and the devil. A golfer
usually gets in a trouble area
only when he hits his ball
wrongly. If he stays in the
fairway the game is really
rather simple. If someone
gets into trouble in his living
for Christ, it is usually
because of some error on his
part. Stay in the way that our
Lord has marked off, and the
Christian living is not
difficult at all. The Bible tells
us that, “...the way of the
transgressor is hard.”
But when a golfer gets into
trouble because of error, he
has a club that is designed to
get him out. There is a sand
wedge with which to get out
of sand traps, and a variety
of irons to give him “loft” out
of the thick rough or over a
tree. Don’t forget that same
Bible that teaches a life of
holy living tells us what to do
if he fails. “If (not when) any
man sins we have an
advocate with the Father,
Jesus Christ the righteous”
(1 John 2:1). Sin is never a
thing. IT IS ALWAYS A
CHOICE. By the grace of
God, and making the right
choice, it can be avoided.
There are five fundament
al aspects to good golf swiqg.
Consider first the essentiality
of good eyesight. Within a
space of a few seconds the
golfer must be able to
determine the distance to the
place he wants to hit the ball.
He must be able to see any
hazards up the fairway and
near the green. Then he has
to be able to see the ball
clearly so as to make crisp
contact. Eyesight is to the
body what faith is to the soul.
What is needed is a faith that

is set for a life time. Let’s not
determine to trust the Lord
for a moment only, but to
trust Him for the entire
distance to eternity. And, if
one lives by faith he will be
able to ascertain many
dangers that are ahead; the
Spirit of God will forewarn
him. Of course, there is not
contact with God except
through faith. So don’t lose
faith; it is fundamental to
Christian living.
Then balance is important
to a good golf swing. One’s
weight must be centered on
the balls of his feet at address
to hold his balance. To be
effective for Christ one must
learn to balance his emotions
of joy with his moods of
depression, weaknesses with
his strengths, and convic
tions with his opinions. Seek
to be a balanced person in
every way within the frame
w'ork of the Scriptures.
Don't forget timing. A
golfer gets in trouble when he
rushes his shots. He has to
keep it smooth and easy. I
don’t believe that God
intends that a Christian
should live so fast and under
such pressures that he
cannot take time to relax and
to reflect on God and His
love. Those times of devotion
are vital to a solid Christian
Life.
Power is necessary to an
excellent sw'ing. It is impos

Rev. Burleson
To Conduct
Revival Here
Second Baptist Church of
Jackson will hold its Spring
Revival beginning Sunday,
May 8. The preacher for
these services is the Rev.
James R. Burleson of
Cochran, Georgia.
Rev. Burleson was at one
time pastor of the Second
Baptist and in a sense he will
be returning home and will
be welcomed by many of the
people of Jackson. He is at
present pastor of the Union
Hill Church at Cochran.
Second Baptist extends a
cordial invitation to the
people of Jackson to attend
these services. According to
Edgar Callaway, Interim
Pastor, the people are ready
for this revival. Make your
plans to attend each evening
service at seven-thirty, be
ginning Sunday, May 8, and
continuing through Friday
evening.
without strength. So it is in
living for Jesus. But one does
not have sufficient power
within himself. One must be
empowered by the Holy
Spirit. “Ye shall receive
power after that the Holy
Ghost is come upon y0u...”
(Acts 1:8). The Holy Spirit
comes to live in the believer
at the new birth, but He fills
and cleanses the Christian
when the man of God makes
his surrender complete. One
does not get spiritual power
in 30 or 40 pound allotments.
Power comes when the Holy
Spirit is in absolute control.
Then do not forget to follow
through. Many golfers hit at
the ball instead of through it.
To hit a satisfying golf shot
one must follow through in
his swing. Following that
thought further, the Christ
ian must recognize that the
initial experience of salva
tion is the starting point not
an end in itself. One must
follow through on his
commitments to Christ. To
be effective for Christ it must
be a daily walk.
That’s it! Living for Chirst
is like playing golf, but living
for Chirt is a life or death
matter, and playing golf is
not. So get Christian living
“in your blood.”
