Minigardens
Can Produce
Tasty Items
Even if you don’t have a
house with a big yard, you
can still be a vegetable
gardener. As long as you
have a patio, a balcony, a
doorstep or even a window
sill, you have space for a
minigarden.
And the U.S. Department
of Agriculture has a booklet
that outlines how to get the
best results from your
project. For a copy of
Minigardens for Vegetables,
send 35 cents to the
Consumer Information Cen
ter, Dept. 111 E, Pueblo,
Colorado 81009.
To start your minigarden,
you'll need containers big
enough for the plants when
they’re fully grown. You can
use plastic or clay pots, an
old pail, a plastic bucket, a
bushel basket, a wire basket,
or a wooden box. If you use
solid plastic containers,
allow for drainage. Drill four
or more '4 inch holes, spaced
evenly along the sides, near
the bottom. Then, to help
drainage, put about a half
inch of coarse gravel in the
bottom of each container.
All right. What next?
First, use a commercial
potting soil (or your own
home-made version of it —the
book tells you how). Because
it is free of plant disease
organisms and weed seeds
and holds moisture well, it
will probably work better
than regular soil.
What do you want to grow?
If you have full sunlight, you
can grow just about any
thing. If you have some
shade, you can still grow root
and leaf vegetables. And if
you have a still shadier area,
put the leaf vegetables like
lettuce there.
When you buy either your
seeds or your plants, look for
miniature varieties. They
will work best in you
minigarden. And look for
types that are disease
resistant.
Once your plants are in the
containers, keep them water
ed. but don’t overwater
them. It is time to water
when the soil is dry down to a
depth of Vs inch. But don’t
water the plants so late in the
evening that the leaves stay
wet at night. Wet leaves
encourage plant diseases.
By the way, you don’t
really even need a patio for
vegetables. You might try
some herbs on the window
sill. A six-inch pot of chives
will keep you harvesting all
year long.
Minigardens for Vege
tables (35 cent) is one of
more than 200 federal
publications of consumer
interest listed in the Spring
edition of the Conumer
Information catalog. Pub
lished quarterly by the
Consumer Information Cen
ter of the General Service
Administration, the Catalog
is free. Just send a postcard
to the Consumer Information
Center, Pueblo, Colorado
81009.

PACAA Head
Is Named To
State Post
Edluie D. Walker, execu
tive director of the Piedmont
Area Community Action
Agency of Jackson, has been
appointed to the State
Housing Committee by the
Georgia Community Action
Association.
The State Housing Com
mittee is an advisory
committee to the State Office
of Housing and has the
responsibility for providing
information on the housing
needs of Georgia.
“The main thrust of the
effort facing the Commit
tee,” Walker said, “is that of
identifying those housing
problems which impede or
prohibit the attainment of the
state housing goal and to
detail alternative policies,
programs and strategies for
alleviating the problem.”
Among the problem areas
preventing “a decent home
and a suitable living environ
ment for all Georgians”,
Walker added, are escalating
housing costs, deterioration
of standard housing, under
utilization of federal housing
resources in Georgia, tre
mendous housing needs of
the low income, elderly and
black, the non-availability of
water and sewer facilities,
and the lack of adequate
support services, such as
schools, hospitals, day care,
recreation, etc.
ELLENWOOD BOY DIES IN
BOATING ACCIDENT
According to Butts County
Sheriff, Billy Leverette,
Timothy Watson Cleveland,
14, of Ellenwood, Georgia
was killed Saturday, May 14,
when the boat in which he
was riding on Jackson Lake
collided with another boat
and he was thrown from the
boat.
Leverette said Cleveland
apparently died from in
juries sustained in the
collision, not from drowning.
His body was recovered
Sunday morning.
Leverette also reported
that a prisoner who escaped
from the County jail last
Wednesday afternoon was
captured later that evening.
Leverette said Stephen
W’ayne Towsend, who was
driving an auto allegedly
stolen in Whitfield County,
was apprehended in Butts
County. He was placed in the
Butts County jail and when a
jail trustee unlocked a cell
door to take food in to a
prisoner, Towsend reported
ly slipped out by the trustee
according to Leverette. He
said Towsend was appre
hended the second time about
11: 00 p.m. Wednesday night
and picked up by the
Whitfield County Sheriff’s
Department, Thursday, May
12.

Grass Fires
Attributed to
Dry Weather
Jackson Fire chief W. L.
Vaughn has reported that
several grass fires have
broken out in the County
during the past week
probably due to the dry and
hot weather.
Vaughn said there has been
no extensive property dam
age and that the fires may
have started from sparks
from passing trains since the
fires were near railroad
tracks. He cautioned anyone
who lives out in the County to
be extremely careful when
burning and reminded city
residents that burning within
the City is prohibited until
there is some rain.
Vaughn also reported a fire
on May 11 at a house
belonging to Elizabeth John
son, 271 Hickory Street.
Vaughn said the fire
started from scrap lumber
burning at the side of the
house and that there was
extensive damage to the
ceiling and extensive water
damage.
Savings Bonds
Sales Moving
Slowly Here
Although sales of United
States Savings Bonds were
on target for the State of
Georgia during the first
quarter, the government
securities did not prove
popular with local investors.
Mrs. Elizabeth Watkins,
Butts County volunteer
chairman for the Savings
Bonds program, reports that
county sales for the first
quarter of 1977 were $21,686,
or 13 per cent of the annual
goal of $165,000. This com
pares with statewide sales of
$24,900,000, or 25 per cent of
the quota of $99,400,000.
Mrs. Watkins attributed
the poor sales locally to the
excessively high unemploy
ment rate Butts County has
registered for the past
several months.
Surrounding counties with
their 1977 goals, sales for the
first quarter, and per cent of
goal reached, include:
Jasper, $65,000, $30,770, 47
per cent; Newton, $350,000,
$95,125, 27 per cent; Henry,
$555,000, $155,666, 28 per
cent; Lamar, $285,000, $60,-
842, 21 per cent; Monroe,
$60,000, $13,752, 23 per cent;
Spalding, $315,000, $73,746, 23
per cent.
Dean Long is area man
ager of the Savings Bonds
program responsible for
Butts County and 71 other
counties in central and
southeast Georgia.
