Clark is a niece of Mrs.
Reese.
Rev. R. W. Jenkins of
Moultrie spent Friday night
with Mr. Harold Standard.
Rev. Jenkins attended a
conference at Cedartown and
stopped over for the over
night visit with Harold.
Rev. and Mrs. Maxie
Threatt, Margaret and Me
lissa, Mr. and Mrs. Don
Thurmon and Mr. Harold
Standard were dinner guests
Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. F. H.
Morgan, Miss Mary Lou
Morgan and Mrs. Elsma
Smith.
Mike Waites became ill
Friday night, was rushed to
Sylvan Grove Hospital, then
transferred to Griffin Hospi
tal, where he underwent an
emergency operation. At last
report he was still on the
critical list.
Mrs. J. B. Kitchens was a
patient from Sunday to
Thursday last week in St.
Joseph’s Hosptial in Atlanta.
Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Reese
and Stacy of Morrow spent
the weekend with their
respective parents, Mr. and

Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Hardy spent a long weekend
vacation at Opera Land in
Nashville, Tenn. and also
visited in Gatlinburg.
Mr. and Mrs. Thurmon
Mullis are vacationing this
week at Jekyll Island. They
also visited Mrs. Mullis’
parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. D.
Gillespie at Atkinson. Billy
visited with his grandpa
rents, the Gillespies, while
his parents were at Jekyll
Island.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd
Bradley, Shara Kay and
granddaughter, Michele
Steele, of Stockbridge, spent
Saturday with Mr. and Mrs.
C. L. Bradley and both
families enjoyed the after
noon at Indian Springs.
Friends of Mrs. Gladys
Burford are sorry to know
that she is a patient at
Coliseum Park Hospital in
Macon.
The youth of Macedonia
Church will spend Thursday,
June 9th, at Six Flags. The
youth minister, Mr. Don
Thurmon, urges all who will
make the trip to be at the
church and board the bus by
9:30 a.m.

Grange, spent the weekend
here with her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Otha Morgan. Mr.
and Mrs. Tom Childs of
Atlanta were supper guests
on Sunday night of Mr. and
Mrs. Morgan and attended
worship services with them
at Macedonia Church. Mrs.
Childs is the sister of Mrs.
Morgan.
Miss Ruby Lane of Jen
kinsburg and the children
and grandchildren of Mr. and
Mrs. Jim McMichael were
their dinner guests on
Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. George
Stanfield were hosts at a
cook-out on the patio of their
lakeside home on Sunday
after church services that
morning. The main features
of the meal were barbecued
chicken and pork chops.
These were supplemented by
an abundance of a variety of
other foods. Guests were Mr.
and Mrs. Tommie Lynch and
Chris, Mr. and Mrs. Tommie
Andrews, Linda, Lacey and
Jimmy, Mr. and Mrs.
Laverne Long, Shane and
Stacy, Miss Peggy Lynch,
Mr. and Mrs. Derriel
Stanfield, Lisa, Terry and
Stoney, all of Griffin, and
Mrs. Martha Dean Jett and
Angela of Conyers. Everyone
enjoyed the delicious meal
and the gracious hospitality
of Mr. and Mrs. Stanfield.

Was Buried At
Pleasant Hill
Funeral services for Mr.
Washington Irving Thornton,
Sr., 88, were held Sunday at
the Pleasant Hill United
Methodist Church. The Rev.
James Reeher officiated and
burial was in the church
cemetery.
Survivors include three
daughters, Mrs. Dorothy
East of Jackson, Mrs. Sara
Elizabeth Colbert of Warner
Robins and Mrs. Mary
Catherine Littleton of
Barnesville; son, John Cal
vin Thornton of Jackson;
sister, Mrs. Gladys Tillery of
Griffin; one grandchild and
several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Thornton died Satur
day morning at Brightmoor
Nursing Home. McDonald
Chapel was in charge of
plans.
Lake City, Utah, cousin of
Mrs. Annie Taylor, was the
weekend guest of Mrs.
Taylor. Dinner guests on
Sunday included Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Taylor, Bill, Cliff
and Len of Atlanta, Mr. and
Mrs. Jack McLees, Miss
Dolores Cook, Mr. Jimmy
Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald

Mr. Luther (Pete) Biles
was a patient for a week in
Sylvan Grove Hospital. He
returned home Friday.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNl—LaGrange College recognized three outstanding alumni
during its 146th commencement exercises, presenting them with the Distinguished Alumni
Award. Those receiving the awards were, left to right, Miss Sue Green of Tucker, class of
1914, a retired teacher; Miss Sarah Bond of Jackson, 1934, also a retired teacher ; and Mrs.
William C. (Ruth Pike) Key, of Atlanta, class of 1917.
MOTORISTS ARE URGED
TO USE CAUTION
Hill Construction Company
of Thomaston, Georgia has
been engaged to patch, level,
and resurface the “Old
Bethel Road” from Lanes
Crossing to State Route 36 at
Four Points, and the High
Falls Road from Jenkinsburg
to State Route 16 at Englands
Chapel Church.
This work will take
approximately two weeks to
complete and motorists tra
veling these two roads are
asked to keep this in mind
and reduce their speed to
minimize the danger to the
workers.

LAMBDIN HALL BE
RENOVATED AT GORDON
The Board of Regents at
their May meeting have
approved the renovation of
Gordon Junior College’s
Lambdin Hall at an estimat
ed cost of $250,000.
Gordon President Jerry
Williamson noted that this
$250,000 renovation project
will increase the state’s
appropriation to Gordon for
building construction and
renovation to almost five
million dollars since the
college became a unit of the
University System in 1972.

Plays Baseball
In Columbus
James Brown, a 1973
graduate of Jackson High
School, has been among the
top leaders in the South
Atlantic Conference batting
race this season as third
baseman for the Columbus
College Cougars who had a
34-16 season going into the
conference baseball tourna
ment at Valdosta.
Brown, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Richard L. Brown of
Flovilla, is a senior at
Columbus College majoring
in physical education. He
served as captain of the 1977
baseball team at Columbus
College and his runs batted in
(rbi) for this season totaled
47, just one short of an
average of one per game.
Brown also had an out
standing athletic career at
Jackson High where he
lettered in both football and
baseball for four years. He
won the Golden Glove award
for baseball in 1971-72 and
was named the most valu
able baseball player for the
1971-72 season. In 1971 and
1972 he received awards for
the most rbi’s.
In football, he was named
the Best Offensive Back in
1972 and served as co-captain
of the football team in 1972.
He also set several records in
football at Jackson High,
among those being the
longest punt and the most
carries.
