Reading Clubs
Occupy Young
During Summer
The Vacation Reading Club
at Hawkes Library is
underway and librarian Mina
Torbett reports the participa
tion in this summer’s
program has been very good.
This year’s theme is “10-4
Good Reader,” and the kids
have until August 31 to take
part in the reading club.
Miss Torbett said those
children taking part in the
Vacation Reading Club will
receive a certificate if they
read 10 books, and if they
read 25 books, they will be
presented a certificate with a
gold star. Participants in the
club are usually in grades
2-12 according to Miss
Torbett.
In addition, there is a
Junior Vacation Reading
Club which includes pre
schoolers and those children
in the first grade. Miss
Torbett said if the kids read
the books themselves or have
someone read the required
number of books to them,
they will also receive a
certificate or certificate with
a gold star.
Miss Torbett noted that
library traffic has picked up
considerably since the Vaca
tion Reading Club began with
as many as 250 books being
checked out in one day.
However, the library has a
good stock of children’s (and
adults’) books and recently
received the complete set of
the Hardy Boys and the
Nancy Drew Series.
Miss Torbett said she
would like to remind every
one taking part in the reading
club to bring his library card
when checking out books. To
receive a card, the person
applying must present some
type of ID or a parent must
sign for a child.
Commenting on the re
quirements for the Vacation
Reading Club, Miss Torbett
said a book checked out from
another library may be
counted as part of a person’s
summer reading list.
Books checked out from
the Flint River Regional
Bookmobile may also be
counted and may be returned
to the Hawkes Library.
