THE JACKSON PROGRESS-ARCUS. JACKSON. GEORGIA THURSDAY, AUGUST 4, 1977,
Voices Out of the Past
Tomorrow night in front of
the Wigwam there will be a
fireworks display with a
brilliant effect, and in the
evening a ball at the
Wigwam. Dances at this
famous hostelry are always
pleasant social affairs. A
number will attend from
here.—Butts County Pro
gress, July 2, 1909.
Still Standing?
Down at Indian Springs in
front of the Varner Hotel
stands a common everyday
pine post that, according to
the best information obtain
able. is certainly 90 years old
and shows not the least signs
of decay and bids fair to
stand another 90 years.
Back in the 1820’s when
Chief Mclntosh built the
Indian Springs Hotel, known
as the Varner House at the
present, he had this very post
erected and it stands today
and seems as sound as a
dollar. And it was erected for
a martin pole; yes, just a
martin pole.
When I first visited Indian
Springs in 1867. the little box
was perched upon the top of
this same post but at present
the box or martin house is
gone.
The post is 24 feet long,
eight inches square at the
base and is square for three
feet above the ground and
then begins a taper and
continues to the top with
chambered corners.
Now the question is, how
much longer will it stand the
ravages of time? It looks now
as though it might stand until
the wasps carry it off to build
their nests. Mic O’Hooligan.

While attending a fish fry
at Mallet’s Springs last week
as the guest of Bailey and
Jones, Mr. S. M. Pope found
an old relic discarded more
than a third of a century. It
was an old knife in a
wonderfully - well preserved
state.
The knife was found at the
same spot at Mallet’s Springs
where it was lost at a
barbecue in 1877.
Present at the fish fry
when the discovery was
made were Dr. R. G. Bryans,
Messrs. W. M. Mallet, Coon
Me Michael, Y. A. Wright, B.
P. Bailey, Joe Carmichael,
Reet McMichael, John Ea
son. Meade Hendrick, Jack
Sawyer, Dave McMichael, S.
M. Pope, B. E. Goolsby, and
B. F. Watkins, Sr.—Butts
County Progress, Sept. 10,
1909.
Miss Jolly With Constitution
Miss Tallie Jolly left this
week for Atlanta to accept a
place on the Atlanta Constitu
tion. being assistant to Miss
Isma Dooly, society editor of
the Constitution. Miss Jolly
has done considerable work
for the Progress for the last
few months and has shown
aptitude for newspaper work.
Her friends in Jackson will
watch her newspaper career
with great interest, and hope
her the most lasting success.
In a broader field where she
can better display her
talents, Miss Jolly is sure to
win a name as one of the
leading members of Geor
gia’s brilliant coterie of
women journalists.—Butts
County News, October 8,
1909.
Run into and overturned by
a passing vehicle on Third
Street Sunday night, Sheriff
W. W. Wilson sustained
severe cuts and bruises on
the face and hands. He was
driving along Third Street in
his buggy when another
buggy going in the opposite
direction ran into his
conveyance, turning it over.
The buggy fell on top of
Sheriff Wilson and he
suffered some painful cuts as
a consequence. It is not
known who the other party
was as he did not stop after
running into Sheriff Wilson’s
buggy.—Butts County Pro
gress; October 15, 1909.
The annual prize drill of
the Jackson Rifles was held
Tuesday night at the school
auditorium and an interest
ing program was rendered in
addition to the drill itself.
The first prize, consisting
of a gold medal and a pair of
shoes, was awarded to Lon
Maddox; the second prize, a
Stetson hat, was awarded to
Carlton Allen, while the third
prize, a pair of shoes, went to
W. L. Etheridge.—Butts
County Progress, October 22,
1909.
Mr. J. A. Kimbell is
fitting up a garage and
automobile repair works at
his shop on Second Street.
Together with Dr. J. B.
Hopkins, Mr. Kimbell will
sell the well known Maxwell
cars in this territory. These
cars have been a favorite in
this place and a successful
business is predicted for the
new agency.—Butts County
Progress, December 3, 1909.

The Three Stingiest Men
It is said that three of the
stingiest men in the state
were in town yesterday. One
of them will not drink as
much water as he wants
unless it is from another
man’s well. The second
forbids any of his family
writing anything but a small
hand as it is a waste of ink to
make big letters. The other
stops his clock at night in
order to save wear and tear
of the machinery. All of them
decline to take the county
paper on the ground that it is
a strain on their spectacles to
read newspapers.—The
Jackson Record, February 1,
1907.
Perverse Human Nature
Some people are so given to
grumbling that nothing ever
pleases them. They grumble
if it rains because they can’t
plow and the grass will grow.
They grumble if it is dry
because the pastures dry up
and the crops fail. They
grumble if it is cold because
it takes too much coal or the
cold gives them rheumatism.
They grumble because it is so
warm they can’t kill hogs
when they have just passed
through a spell cold enough
to freeze the whiskers off a
billy goat.
Why don’t people look on
the bright side of everything:
take everything as a blessing
from providence specially to
them to cheer them on their
way? Why not see things like
the contented old woman
who, in giving her experi
ence, stated that “while she
didn’t have so much to feel
thankful for as some of the
rest, she had two teeth and
she thanked God they
bit.”—The Jacksonian, Feb
ruary 22, 1907.
Didn’t Know
A young newlywed com
plained to mother about
the bridegroom’s continued
drinking habits, “If you
knew he drank, why did you
marry him?” Mom asked.
“I didn’t know he drank until
he came home sober,” the
daughter answered.
