with 23 seniors from a team
that almost won the sub
region last year. Lamar
County perhaps has the best
passing attack in the State
Class A. Now they have found
a running game to go with the
aerial circus. On the road
they will be super tough. We
again travel to Harris
County, last year’s sub
region champions. Pike
County is the Homecoming
Dish, after which the Devils
take a week off to prepare for
arch rival Mary Persons in
Forsyth, probably for ‘‘all
the marbles.” No doubt a
Herculean challenge is ahead
if the Devils expect to
improve from last year.
Head Coach Tommy Car
THE JACKSON PROGRES3*ARGUS, JACKSON, CEORCIA THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1977
michael begins his second
year as Head Coach of
Jackson. His charges are
small, aggressive and overly
enthusiastic. Carmichael is
pleased with the “attitude
and desire.” Experience will
be limited at some skill
positions but abundant in
others. The offensive unit
will be composed of three
seniors led by a Junior
quarterback. The line is
small, receivers adequate.
The kicking game needs
improvement. The defense is
the strong point.
A capsule analysis reveals
the following two deep roster
for the 77 Jackson Red
Devils. At quarterback, Tim
Kersey, a good ball handler,
will lead the team. He will be
handing off to an excellent
trio of senior running backs,
Merrill Folsom, Reggie Hen
derson, and Terry Shivers.
Ronnie Dodson is a capable
back-up at QB. Charles
Stewart, Willie Ward, and
Mike Barber will see action
in the backfield.
The middle of Jackson’s
offensive line averages about
140 lbs. from guard to guard
and that’s with red mud on
their cleats. Don’t sell the
size as an Achilles heal. Cary
Maddox and John Loftin at
guards are whitleather
tough. Lawrence Biles, soph
omore center, will be there
scrapping three years hence.
Mark Cook backs up the
guards along with Mike
Baxter. Danny Patterson is
reserve center. Wesley Ba
ker at 202 pounds and David
Wyatt, 202, can handle the
tackle slots against anybody.
Bennon Prine and Terry
Smith are back-up tackles on
offense but are “key”
starters on the defensive line.
Scott Smith holds down left
end while Tommy Sims, also
the punter, is an imposing
figure at right end. Leon
Smith and Cedric Evans are
pushing the starters at end.
Coach Jerry Sellers begins
his first year coaching the
offensive line at Jackson.
Line Coach was a missing
ingredient last season. Bill
Nelson coaches the receivers
and secondary while James
Stancil handles the Backfield
Corps.
Defensively, Jackson is
solid. Coach Bo Wolfe, one of
the inventors of the “4x4
Stack” defense, coaches the
hostile Devil defenders. The
down linemen are Barry
Brooks and Terry Smith, two
dedicated sophomores at the
tackles and Anthony Stewart
and Prine at the guards. Big
John Freeman, the second
largest lineman in the state,
pro or college, is a key back
up, limited only by experi
ence. Wyatt and Cook will
also see defensive action.
Jeff Hurst is a very
promising young linemun
who will see action this
season.
The Cornerbacks are su
perlatives. Charles Stewart,
Stan Nelson, Shivers and
Henderson can all play with
the best. Baxter, Dodson, and
Folsom will get relief work in
the linebacking area. The
secondary consists of Free
Rover Arthur Pye, the
fastest man on the team,
Leon Smith at strong safety
and Ward at safety. Joe
Kersey and Ernest Lawrence
spell Pye and Smith. Ward,
Dodson and Barber will
compete for place kicking
duties.
That’s the way it looks at
the first turn. The track is
rough up ahead and nothing
gets easy. The fans will see
good football, hear and see a
fine Jackson band perform
and be treated to an
entertaining evening. Victo
