July Traffic
Sets Record
In Georgia
Traffic count figures for
July just released by the
Georgia Department of
Transportation show that
travel in July showed an
increase over June, as usual,
and that this July was the
busiest July on record for
Georgia highways. The read
ing for an average day of the
month at a typical counting
station was 12,910 vehicles,
which was 2.1 per cent more
than in July of 1976, 7.6 per
cent more than in July of 1975
and 8.8 per cent more than in
July of 1974.
The July figure is up from
the daily count of 12,722
vehicles in June, which is an
expected increase during the
vacation season. However,
the estimated daily traffic
count for the year, which is
revised as each month’s
figures become known, is
down slightly from the June
estimate of 12,321 vehicles. It
is now estimated at 12,310
vehicles for this year. This is
still ahead of counts for
previous years: 2.6 per cent
more than in 1976 and 18.7 per
cent more than in 1971.
The DOT has new figures
on the four major traveled
ways in the state for the past
three Julys. The count on
1-20, measured at Covington,
rose 8.4 per cent from July
1975 to July 1977 but actually
had a decline of 1.4 per cent
in the July 1976-77 period.
Interstate 75, based on July
readings averaged from
Calhoun and Perry, rose 12
per cent overall from 1975 to
77. but the increase was
smaller in the latter two
years: 5.1 per cent. Inter
state 85 at Carnesville had 9.4
per cent more traffic from
July 1975 to July 1977, but
only four per cent over the
latter two years. On the
coast, 1-95, the newest of
these roads, showed a big 29
per cent gain over the three
Julys, but July 1976 to July
1977 was up only 11.4 per
cent. It is clear from all of
these that the rate of growth
was slowing in the July
1976-July 1977 period.
Traffic counts are made by
a network of 47 continuous
count stations whose data
can be relayed to computers
in Atlanta. July 1977 traffic
was up in all categories from
July a year ago: 6.7 per cent
in non-interstate urban, 3.1
per cent in interstate urban,
10.6 per cent in non-interstate
rural and 5.1 per cent in
interstate rural.
