If you can’t, you are working

Voices Out of the Past
New Game Has
Arrived Here
The new game, Vinko,
which is sweeping the
country has arrived in
Jackson.
The new game is especially
designed for the home and
party. An examination of the
game reveals a wonderful
combination of cards that
furnishes a bright, cheerful,
clean, entertaining game.
Jackson Book Company is
indeed fortunate to have
received a large shipment of
this popular game. Butts

Puzzle Almost Got
Senator Smith’s Goat
Here’s the puzzle that
nearly got Senator Hoke
Smith’s goat but didn’t. It
was sent to him by a civil
service applicant who could
not work it, and who claimed
it was unfair to put such
things in a civil service
examination.
Senator Smith was all tired
and worn out from a tariff
debate, but he decided to
drop everything and not go to
sleep that night until he
had mastered the problem. It
isn’t as easy as it looks. See if
you can get the answer:
A park which is square is
surrounded by a walk
containing an acre of ground.
The walk is two rods wide. An
acre is 160 rods. What is the
size of the park? Butts

Mr. W. M. Crawford
Has A Rare Old Bill
Mr. W. M. Crawford has a
S3O bill that is unique for its
age and the conditions under
which it was issued.
It bears the date of 1776,
before the colonies had
thrown off the British yoke,
and was issued at Philadel
phia. The money was known
as Continental Currency.
On one side is a seal with
the inscription, “Si rectes
factaes.” On the reverse are
two seals and this printed
matter: “This bill entitles
the bearer to receive thirty
Spanish milled dollars, or the
value thereof in gold or
silver, according to a
resolution of Congress
passed at Philadelphia No
vember 2, 1776.”
It was signed by C. Dorsey
as registrar of the treasury.
Mr. Crawford came into
possession of the certificate a
year or so ago when he was a
conductor on a train in South
Carolina. He has been
offered face value for the bill
but has refused to part with
it. Butts County Progress,
Sept. 12, 1913.

Mud Pies
Down in a little back garden,
Under a sunny sky,
We made mud pies together-
My little sweetheart and I,
Stained was the little pink
apron,
Muddy the jacket blue.
As we stirred and mixed and
tasted,
Out in the sun and dew.
Why do I dream of that
garden,
I who am old and wise?
Why am I longing, longing
For one of those old mud
pies?
Oh, for the little pink apron.
Oh, for the jacket blue,
For the blessed faith of
childhood
When make-believe was
true.

The Violet Gate
1 knew a little winding way
Adown whose path is set
A tiny gate that opens to
A breath of violet.
No other blossoms weave
the spell
Or hold the hidden key.
These fragrant lips alone
possess
The magic witchery.
Give but the scent of violets
Beneath a dreamset sky,
And down the little winding
way
Walk memory and I.
