WHOOPING COUGH
Whooping cough is an
acute infectious disease
which involves the respira
tory tract.
The characteristic cough
accompanied by a whooping
sound is almost diagnostic.
There isn’t much whooping
cough around any longer, but
even the few cases need not
happen. There is a good
vaccine that prevents whoop
ing cough.
The American Medical
Association points out that
whooping cough was de
scribed in medical reports as
early as 1578 and occurred in
epidemic form in England in
the 17th century.
The organism responsible
is a red-shaped bacterium
known as Haemophilus per
tussis. It is found in the
discharge coughed from the
respiratory passages by a
victim of the disease. The
organism does not survive
long outside the body and is
quickly destroyed by drying
and exposure to heat and
sunlight.
The disease may occur at
any season but is most
common in late winter,
spring and summer. Most
cases appear at ages under 5
years. One attack usually
produces immunity.
Vaccination against
whooping cough is effective.
Many school districts require
vaccination against whoop
ing cough and several other
childhood diseases before
children may enroll in
school.
Symptoms include inflam
mation of the respiratory
tract and such secretion of
mucus, which becomes quite
thick and sticky as the
disease progresses. Cough
ing may be prolonged and
violent and accompanied by
a whooping sound. Some
times the child may vomit
after a coughing spell.
Convalescence usually be
gins after four weeks. Very
young children are most
seriously affected. Medical
care, isolation and good
nursing care are essential.
But. most important, make

Children often run alarm
ingly high temperatures with
certain childhood illnesses.
You should have a ther
mometer handy to take
readings and your family
physician should be consult
ed if your child is running a
high fever. But, what can you
do to reduce the fever if a
doctor is not immediately
available?
The first step would be to
give the child aspirin. There
are various brands of
children’s aspirin on the
market and the proper
dosage is prescribed on the
container. Aspirin usually
brings the fever down, but if
a high temperature persists,
then try sponging the child
with a mixture of alcohol and
warm water. The two should
be mixed in equal parts.

Cornish hens are a wel
come change from baked
chicken. They are tender and
flavorful, especially if basted
often while they bake. The
basting sauce is this week’s
recipe. This can also be used
for baked chicken.
Sauce:
>2 cup butter, melted
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 tablespoon soy sauce
Juice of one lemon
Baste Cornish hens at least
6 to 7 times while they bake.
Bake at 350 degrees for 1
hour and 45 minutes. They go
well with this baked rice
recipe, since both can bake at
the same time.
BAKED RICE
1 can beef consomme
(Campbell’s soup)
1 can beef bouillon (Camp
bell’s soup)
1 can rice (use soup can to
measure) This is uncooked
long grain rice
Sliced fresh mushrooms
Place soups, rice and
mushroms in a casserole
dish, stir and cover. Bake at
350 degrees for 45 minutes to
1 hour until done.

Women Should
Use Caution
When Alone
Rape is the most serious
crime affecting a woman.
The Georgia Bureau of
Investigation’s Crime Pre
vention Squad advises wo
men to practice common
sense and always be alert in
all situations. Here are some
precautionary measures that
every woman should prac
tice.
When you are at home,
make sure that doors and
windows are kept locked.
Know who’s at your door
before you open it and
require an ID from all
service people. If someone
comes to your door asking for
help, let them wait outside
while you telephone for them.
Leave lights on if you will
return after dark and have
door key in your hand when
approaching the door. In
struct children not to answer
the door. List only first initial
on a mailbox and in the phone
directory. Report suspicious
or obscene phone calls and do
not give personal informa
tion over the telephone.
If you are walking, stay in
well-lighted areas away from
bushes, buildings, and en
trances to garages or alleys.
Plan your route and know
where to go for help. Vary
your route from time to time.
Always be aware. If someone
follows you. cross the street.
If a car is following you, turn
quickly, and walk in the
opposite direction, heading
for safety. Never walk alone
if you are upset, have been
drinking, or are taking any
drug. If you are in danger,
RUN toward people and
SCREAM.
When driving, make sure
that all doors are locked and
windows are up. Park in
well-lighted areas and have
keys in hand. Check the
inside of the car before
getting in. If you have car
trouble, signal for help with a
white cloth or raised hood.
