The board of trustees 01 Mercer
University have just bold nil emer¬
gency session in the interest of the
Mercer endowment. The effort to
raise 850,000 among tho Baptists of
Georgia to securo tho conditional gif.
of 815,000 from Mr. John I). Rocke¬
feller—making in all 865,000 additional
for the endowment of Mercer 1 diver¬
sity, is rapidly, and wo are re joiced to
say, hopefully drawing to a close. Ac¬
cording to the contract tho time ex¬
pires November 1, 1001. There is
still serious work ahead of us.
Here is the situation; We must
raise $8,000 in nine remaining days. We
want this amount in cash by the 1 st of
November. We cannot affoft to fail.
The cause of education generally, and
of Christian education especially, the
interests of our denontii. .onal
strength and usefulness are all involv¬
ed iu the work. We appeal therefore
in the name of the trustees to the
churches that have contributed, to in¬
crease if possible their contributions;
to those that have not contributed to
take the matter up the 27th, the last
Sunday in the time limited; and to our
brethern and friends of Mercer Univei
sity everywhere that they give their
assistance in this crisis. The great
mass of our people have given prompt¬
ly and generously. Energetic, eu
thusiaslic and co-operative work for
the next few days will bring success.

The announcement that Gentry
Bros.’ famous shows are soon to cx
Inbit iu Ft. Gaines has lead to numerous
inquiries about the details. As is the
custom of the Gentry Bros.’ shows,
their entire outfit will be brought to
this city for exhition. All of the num¬
erous features will be seen in tin* street
parade, and tho many new acts and
animals added this season will all ap¬
pear in the daily program given by
these animal celebrities. Everything
pertaining to Gentry Bros.’ shows is
as usual tirst-class. The tents are wa¬
ter proof, tho seats are the best, the
most polite attendants and all the ac¬
cessories of a first-class show are given
with tins attraction. They will ex
hibit in this city, giving two perfor¬
mances, afternoon and night 011 Wed¬
nesday, October 30.

Presbyterian church Sunday called for
the purpose of electing a ruling eider
and two deacons, Joshua Jones was
elected to the first named office and
Dr. Wimberly and Mr. J. II. Haskins
were elected deacons. The oidinnti* 1
