Various Improvement*.
There is considerable improvement
going on about town, and the music of
the saw niul hammer dispels the usual
dulness of the spring season and makes
a welcome sound to tho cars of the
progressive.
Mr. John Brown lias begun work on
his new residence on the corner west
of the Methodist church.
Mr. J. P. Rest is remodeling the
roof of his residence, which renders
its appearance considerably improved.
Mr. R. D. AVilhams has begun the (
work of rebuilding his home on North
Hancock street, which was destroyed
by fire some months since.
New roofs have recently been put on
the Dobbins House, the residence of
Mr. J. C. Simpson and the two stores
between the Rank of Fort Games and
the warehouse.
Work on Mr. J. R. Paulliu’s hand¬
some new rcsiilenco is progressing
nicely, with tho prospect of early com¬
pletion. It will indeed be ait ornament
to the town, being imposing, elegantly
finished and complete in all of its ap¬
pointments. Mr. Cawhern, the build¬
er, informs us that there is a prospect
of other nice homes being erected in
the Fort.
White Mini Turned Yellow.
Great consternation wn* felt by the
friends of M. A. Ilogarty of Lexington,
Ivy., when they saw he was turning
yellow. Ilis skin slowly changed color,
also his eyes, and he suffered terribly.
His malady was Yellow Jaundice,
lie was treated by the best doctors,
but without benefit. Then ho was
advised to try Electric Ritters, the
wonderful Stomach andLivcrJ remedy,
and he writes: “After taking two bot¬
tles I was wholly cured.” A trial
proves it matchless merit for all Stom¬
ach, Liver and Kidney troubles. Only
50c. Sold by S. P. C. Hatchett Drug¬
gist.

The management of the Albany

lady from each county in this part of
the state to take part in the singing by
the choir at next session pf the
chautauqua, which opens April 20,
The young ladies thus selected will be
given vocal training free of charge by
some of tiie best teachers the country
affords. Some time since Mayor Mc¬
Allister was requested to select a young
lady to represent this county, and call¬
ing to his assistance some of tho ladles
of the town, they have agreed upon
Miss Emma Coleman. Miss Emma is
a young lady of rare vocal attainments,
and her friends are gratified by the
compliment thus paid her.

Surgery is no longer necessary to
cure piles. De Wilt’s Witch Hazel
Salve cures such cases at once, remov¬
ing the necessity for dangerous, painful
and expensive operations. For scalds,
cuts, burns, wounds, bruises, sores and
skin diseases it is unequalled. Beware
of counterfeits. S. J*. C. Hatchett;

A rumor is going around that Am¬
erican syndicates are taking advantage
of Cuba’s industrial straits by making
large purchases of Cuban plantations
at panic prices. The bankers at Hav¬
ana who have been sustaining the
planters with credits are said to have
been disheartened by delay in leg¬
islation at Washington and to have lost
faitli m the purpose of Congress to
afford any relief to insular industries;
accordingly the financially weaker
holders of sugar and tobacco lands are
being forced to sell out. To bankrupt
the nation which we went to war to
liberate and hand over its possession
to greedy exploiters from the United
States would be to crown the infamy
ot our Cuban policy. Congress may
not have intended to bring about this
result by its subservient dillydallying
at the behest of the beet sugar lobby;
nevertheless should the crime be con¬
summated Congress would bo ft re¬
sponsible participant.—Philadelphia
