-t The impartAii ty, fairness and legal
wisdom wuh which the judge presides
is .as usual’ a subject of general remark.
There is not a mbre popular judge on
the bench, and we-are glad to know
that he will be a candidate for re-elec¬
tion. It is perhaps safe to saciie will
have no opposition. Iiis hold upon
the people is appreciated !ry ihe pro¬
fession, and there are none who would
care to “go up against him” in a race.
E3|Col. Laing seems to have gotten the
duties of his position down “fine,” and
makes quite an acceptable official. He
is courteous and prompt and thor¬
oughly familiar with the law. Jle
makes new friends at each session of
court.
It is probable that the term will be
adjourned to-day. In fact there has
been but little for the court proper to
do all the week. The grand jury lias
had a busy session, demanding the
constsnt attention and assistance of
the solicitor, and his absence has prac¬
tically suspended operation in the other
branch of the court,
Mr. E. N. McKeithen and Col. F.
E. Grist served as foreman and secre¬
tary, respectively, of the grand jury.
A summary of the transactions of
the court will bo published next week.

A writer in an exchange has a le.ugl.liv
article on the subject: “Heip Your
Town.” In part lie says: Another
way t0 lu .|p your town is to do all you
can l0 bcauFfy it. Beautify your own
property all you can and then do all
you can to help beautify the streets.
J5c friendly to everybody and courteous
to strangers, Your civility will help
make good impressions and will be
carried away and cherished. Never
forget that you are a part of the town
and that your deportment helps to
make up the stranger’s estimate of the

can at home. Every dollar that is
sent or carried away from the town
makes it that much the poorer.
