H. MI'LLIS, JR. Business Mgr. SUBSCRIfTION PRICE SI.OO PER YE At The Jones County Mob That \va« a very ‘'ex lorah-e affair in .Tones County, where a mob fail ing to take three negroes accused of murder from the authorities, burned down two negro churches and a ne gro school house and lodge. This, was outrageous, uncivilized and re prehensible conduct , for which there j is no excuse, and we are absolutely sure it is condemne I by every good citizen of the county. In the light of the* twentieth cen tury civili:at'on, and standing up on the threshold of the South’s greatest prosperity, we would he re creant to every impulse of our I (ot ter nature.should we fail to condemn in the strongest terms the action of that unbridled moo, who failuq to secure the direct object of their wrath, wreaked their vengeance up on tic* entire negro community by destroying tbeir churches and school houses. We yield to no man in regard to to our convictions of white suprem acy. We believe that social (■qual ity is reprehensible in the sight of God, and will never lie tolerated in this country. The negro don’t ex pect, it, and the white man wifi not allow it , but we believe with all ot our hearts in the supremacy of tin law. That specie of outlawry ex hibited in Jones county is a sad re flection upon the justice, civilization and enlightenment of the people, who should he far removed from the slightest contemplation of such methods. If we desire to take our place in the front ranks of civilization, and inherit the blessing that God has bestowed upon us, we should arise as one man and condemn these in- j discriminate and unreasonable mobs, who take the law in their hands, and defame the fair name of our people. It seems that the future has in store for us the greatest possibilities of anv part of this republic, and if we as a people measure up to these possibilities, we should uphold the the law, demand justice to the weak, as well as to the strong, and in every way deport ourselves in a manner that will render us capable of coping with the great possibilities in store for us —And then we have a great problem to solve some time, and in some way —Will the conduct of the mob in Jones County help us to solve the race question? Will it make us a greater, broader, and more tolerant people, better able to take care of such an impending situation? Will mere hatred of the negro and contemptuous proceedings of a mob in the ruthless destruction of property in any way alleviate our troubles? If these negroes committed mur der, they should be promptly tried, convicted and executed. Mob law means anarchy, and shotdd not-be tubvuted in a civiliz ed country rider any cir<*t»ttislances. It-UWAorowsbiy demoralizing, and p. vn aer@To the criminal tendencies of the baser element. Speaking from the standpoint of a Caucasian and one who has su preme faith in the absolute, fixed and unalterable supremacy of the great Aryan race, and feeling that I am voicing the sentiments of the great majority of our people, who love lew and order, and believe in justice and riglit. We condemn tiie action of that mob as being an utter violation of the senetiments, spirit, and prin ciples of the brave, generous and •aw abiding people who constitute the Liackhono and abiding strength ■«f our country. The great heart of Dixie, swelling with feelings of jus tice towards all mankind, and re trarding their rights under the law as to nroteotio* of person and pro oerty, regardless of race or color crie* out against it, and while we •ot intrenched in the strongest and oftie-t position of any people on iiit- earth, and with an eye single to the maintinance of this position at any cost, we arc untrue to . very impulse of u great people, w. .eii we resort to mob law to settle air grievances and avenge our wrongs. it is true we are hummed in by a peculiar situation that will take all die streiu tli and patience of our people to cope with, and in the exi gencies of this situation in order to maintain our inherent superiority, measures may have to he resorted to which would seem harsh and discriminating, hut no people who nave had serious problems to con tend with have failed to use such means as they deemed proper, in order to accomplish tods, that would ultimately redound to the universal good. We frankly admit that we often have circumstances to meet, that tries men s souls: the unmentionable ci ime is committed; your neighbor frenzied and grieved, his heart torn and bleeding; his sou! consumed vith the unquenchable fires of re venge, appeals to you for assistance, and with a distress u lequaled and unparalleled by any other circum stances that could possibly happen, he tells you his innocent child was outraged by a black demon of hell. You are immediately transformed into an abnormal condition. Every fibre of your body pulsates with re venge; your inherent love for virtue; your unbounded desire to destroy everything and everybody that in terferes with the sanctity of our homes, momentarly resolves you into a demon, flushed with excite ment increased and fomented, as I you persue the villiao, and failing to secure the guilty, the innocent is often made to suffer. The fact of the business is, the negro is here with us at least for some time to come —We need him in our busi ness. We know of no laborer that will serve our pnrpose better. Let’s keep him in his place and treat him right —Don’t destroy his school houses and churches. His religion may he crude, emotional and super stitious, hut don’t him in his religion and let him have en ough education to keep designing rascals from swindling him out of the fruits of his labor.
