Political Pot
Is Boiling
The political pot is now toiling.
Our people are exercised over the
race between Brown and Smith.
You can hear nothing else on these
streets. Friends are arrayed against
each other. Of course most of the
"claptrap” that is talked on the
streets is done in a good natured
way, but misapprehensions and
slanders are engaged in that is real
ly detrimental to the unity and
peace of our community. I wish
our people would bear in mind that
the good will and feelings of their
ncightors are worth more to them
that any candidate for governor or
any other office in this state, anil
when the race is over and Brown or
•Smith is elected, you will to left
alone to heal up the wounds you
have made, and neither Smith or
Brown (whoever the victor may Ik;)
will ever know thatthe great major
ity of us are in existence. Gentle
men, it is all wrong. You talk
about Brown men "flopping” over
to Smith and Smith men flopping
over to Brown. What are you go
ing to do after the primary? Won’t
there have to to a wholesale " (Hop
ping” on one side or the other?
Some men are becoming so bitter
over this race that it actually seems
that some of them will have to stult
ify themselves, or refuse to support
\ fL'fletnoei btich ,*>mi u ee. Look at
campaign in the tenth district.
It is absolutely a disgrree to civiliz
'ation. The brilliant Thos E. Wat
son on one side of his native town
denouncing in the most bitter terms
the present representative, the Hon.
Thos. W. Hardwick, while the lat
tei* is on the other side of town us
ing all the calumny and invective
at his command against Mr. Wat
son, and both threatening to put
the other in the chaingang after the
primary is over. Watson fearing ass
assination, had ,his house guarded,
claiming that Hardwick had threat
ened his life, and Hardwick de
nounced Watson in such rough lan
guage that he had to actually ajatli
gize to the ladies. Now what is
coming over the spirit of our
dreams? Where is the boasted civ
ilization of the twentieth century?
Whitt has become of the old time
Southern gentleman, who respected
his opponent, and confined himself
to parlimentary language? Has the
splrit'of the times changed? Are
our statesmen deteriorating?
The time seems to have arrived,
when no man in public life is safe
against the poisioned arrow of the
character assassian. Our political
institutions ar held up to us as rot
ten to the core. Men in high places
are accused of being grafters, politi
cal mountebanks and susceptable to
bribery, until the ordinary citizen
looks upon our public men with a
degree of suspicion and a lack of
confidence unparalelled in the his
tory of our republic.
I believe our people are getting
tired of all this abuse and misrep
resentation. Look at the career of
the brilliant and versatile Thos. E.
Watson, who can say that his in
fluence has not toen impaired by
the bitter acrimony that has been
injected into his entire ploitical ca
reer. His friends say that he is
justifiable. He is, in all probability
sincere and believes he is fighting
for the right, but the bitter personal
attacks made on him and made by
him will follow’ him to the grave.
Polities is a queer thing. When
you get into it it is hard to get out.
It seems to be fascinating. The in
herent tendency of man is to com
pete. When he gets into the race

toying everything else aside, let
us present an unbroken rank and
solid front for Cochran and Bleckiey
County. It is our people whom we
love. It is our people in whose in
terest we are interested. People of
Cochran, the farmers located in the
vicinity are your custumers, and
should to- your best friends and
neighbors. Their friendship and
confidence are worth a thousand
times more to you than all the oth
er outside interests of the state com
bined. It was extremely gratifying
to see the country and the town
completely united on the new coun
ty question Our interests are inter
woven and interdependent. We are
one socially amt industrially. The
same blood flows through our veins.
We are tound together by Christ
ian affiliation and fraternal associ
ation. Let not outside issues tear
us asunder. We have put forth
what little influence and talent we
had in the interest of those things
we have honestly thought would be
for the best welfare of our little
town and surrounding country.
For weeks before sufficient means
were provided for the maintainanev
of our school, we filled our columns
with articles on education and did
our best toward creating a sentiment
favorable to the support of our ex
cellent school. We claim no credit
whatever for the success of this
movement, or that we were able
within ourselves to wield any appre
ciable influence but we know we
kept hammering and the good peo
ple rallied to the support of our ed
ucational institution and we believe
we are going to have the best school
in the third Congressional district
and if we have contributed one sin
gle iota towards this end, we feel
amply rewarded.
