Death of Little Alton Haskins. Little Alton Haskins, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Haskins, age 15 months, died Tuesday, Sept. 27th. He was sick only three or four days. His funeral was preach ed by Rev. F. B. Asbe.ll and he was buried in Weeping Pine cemetery last Wednesday. Death of Jewel Fausett Little Jewel Fausett, the three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. .J. A. Fausett, was taken ill verV suddenly and died from • con gestion of the bowels last Thursday. She was up and playing in the yard on Thursday morning and was seized with an exceedingly high fever and expired the same day. Maness Dead B. E. Maness who just a week a go today shot and instantly killed Mrs. E. H. Williams and painfully wounded Mrs. Virginia Royal, at Abbeville died Saturday afternoon as a result of a self-inflicted wound in the head with the same pistol from which he never fully regained consciousness. He was being held in the county jail at the time of his death. —(Jordele Rambler. Mr. Jr C* Tucker - : r v Pardoned Yesterday . When*.|, 0. Tucker receiver the pardon which was signed yesterday; by Governor-Brown he will leave the state farm at Milleflgevilld and take, a train for Milledgeville, to re join his wife and six little ones. There are two baby girls who he will especially delight to sec. Tucker was convicted in Telfair county at the fall term of court in 1909 of killing T. H. Davis, who had repeatedly bullied and insulted him. Tucker is a hopeless cripple and was no match physically for his persecutor. When he became convinced that his life was in dan ger he armed himself and shot his antagonist at the next meeting. Fie was arrested tried, found guilty; and sentenced to life imprisonment. His application for a pardon was approved by all the trial jury and by seventeen members of the grand jury which indicted him. The trial judge and solicitor, while they did not indorse the application outright, did not oppose it. The prison com mission approved the application and the governor granted a pardon. Bryant has been sick, but we hope he will soon recover. Mrs. Lizzie Benson and Miss Car rie spent Saturday evening with Mrs Fred Floyd. Mrs. Ira Anglon spent Saturday afternoon with Mrs. G. G. Floyd. Mrs. Willie Bell Roland is spen ding a few T days with her mother-in law . Ira Anglon and Ernest Cheek went opossum hunting Friday night and caught a fine one. G. G. Floyd and family spent Sunday with his brother, W. A. Floyd, and family. waited his coming, but the two ba by girls h i,ve been particularly in sistent. Each evening as they hear the train whistle they run to their mother and say: ’lsten, mama, ’isten. Train b’ows like papa is turnin’.” The application for Tucker’s par don was also approved by the widow of the man he murdered. —Atlanta Constitution. Mr. 'Fucker and his excellent fam ily are well known and prominent ly connected at Cochran. Mrs. Tucker was a Miss Mattie Obcrry, daughter of the late J. E. Oberry, one of our most successful, worthy, and prominent citizens. She is also a sister of Mrs. T. 1). Walker, Sr., and is known by all of her friends and connections as a most lovable character and devoted wife. Mr. Tucker was agent jf the South ern Railway at this place about twenty three years ago, and is well known throughout the coun try. Their many friends and con nections are delighted that he has been restored to his family. Atlanta Surpasses the Whole South in Building The amount of building permits issued in Atlanta from January 1 to September 1 was greater than the amount of permits in any other city in the south. The permits issued here amount ed to 85,411,062. In Louisville to $3,877,675; in Nashville to $1,301, 159; in Birmingham to $2,525,062 Memphis is the only southern city that approaches Atlanta. The permits there amounted to $4,722, 998. The permits that have been is sued in Atlanta this year amount to $5,683,955. The permits issued the whole of last year amounted to $5,551,951. Fewer building permits have been issued during September than during any month of this year. The amount of the permits for this much of September is $272,393. The permits issued during Septem ber last year amounted to $439,791. Mrs. Jackson, of Eastman, is in the city for a few days with Mrs. C. E. Taylor. Ty Cobb to Race at Atlanta Speedway Atlanta,(Ja.,Sept.29—Tyrus Ray mond Cobb of Royston.Ga.,probably the leading batter of the American League this year;and Nepolin Ruck er,of Crabapple‘Ga.,doubtless the best left hander in the National Lea gue, will meet this fall on the Atlanta Automobile Association's speedway in a match race for the Speedway Championship of the big league. Cobb is batting bravely now for possession of the Chalmers automo bile offered for the big league's best batter this year and stands a good show of winning it. If he does he may drive that machine against R"cker’s own car, a speed Buiek. If the men do not drive their own machines they will use eark selected from the array that will be on hand for the fall races. Cobb has long beep an automobile bug of the most pronounced type. Last fall he drove a machine in the Journal-Herald, Neiv York-to-At lanta run and was one of the. warm est fans at the Speedway meet. Rucker is an autoist of several years standing. One day, a few years back, he walked into the local Buick agen cy, said lie wanted to look at an automobile, found one that suited his fancy and nearly knocked -the salesman cold by peeling the coin off a monumental roll of bills and driving away in the machine.
