Bombards, who was of powerful stature, seized his assailant. They struggled desperately, but Santos was able to disengage his arm and fired the remaining cartridges. | Servants In the hospital rushed in, but Bombnrdn rose nnd. throwing him self before Santos, cried out to them, "Don’t strike him; he Is mad!" Then he fell unconscious and died a few hours later. Although it was evident that Santos i was suffering from madness, the Ite ; publican masses accepted the assas sination ns a deliberate plot to wipe out one of their leaders. | The revolution, according to another view, was precipitated by tho queen mother's adhesion with the Clerical party, led by Jnclnto Cnndldo, a mem ber of parliament and In fiigli favor with the queen. It was nsserted soon after King Manuel announced his lib eral policy that the Clerical party was fostering a plan to dethrone the king nnd sent Doin Miguel de Brnganza on the throne. It Is well known thnt the queen se cretly opposed the king because of his literal tendencies, and she Joined tho Clerical party without, however, as senting to the plan to raise De Bra ganzn to the throne. The production of broiler chickens In the season when they are supposed to be the choicest and most correct article on the menu Is a very special branch of the poultry industry, says Farm Progress. The "spring chicken” at the same age and of the same weight does not rank with the high priced "broiler” of the midwinter months, aud the rearing of the latter requires especial conven iences nnd special care. It Is not a branch of the business adapted for general following, and be fore making arrangements to engage In It the market should be Recured In ono or more of the large cities, and the production to be profitable must be In very considerable numbers. Broiler chickens are between three and four months old nnd must each weigh from one to one and a half pounds, live weight, nnd nt this age should be plump nnd symmetrical with white flesh when dressed. For this purpose the white or buff breeds of the American or English races are INTEHIOII OK GOOD BIIOODBH HOURS. to he preferred to any of (fee Asiatics on account oflttlielr more rapid matur ing. Sunny and weather proof houses must be provided, but except In very cold climates no arrangements for ar tificial heating need l>e made In addi tion to those for warming the brood ers. The chickens are necessarily hatrhed In Incubators, ns during late Septem ber nnd October, when the eggs are sot, the hens are mostly molting and, oven If some show broodiness, are not In condition to be hatching and hov eling young. Incubators and brooders, the former of the most improved pat ents, are to be selected nnd their man agement experimented with and thor oughly mastered. Quite a large number of brooders will be required, but some of these, de signed for the chickens when quite well grown, mnny of the tireless sort or of home construction, to be warmed with jugs of hot water which, when well wrapped, will retain their heat for many hours. Late hatched chicks become quite hardy, and when well eared for and properly fed are not subject to any of the diseases to which summer chick ens are liable. They will not need much range, but on warm, clear days may be permitted to exercise for a few hours on the lawn or In a wire fenced yard upon which the houses open, nnd on such days all the brooders ought to be sunned for several hours. Of course the strictest cleanliness In all the appointments as well as In the food and water must be observed, and if the houses are new or have been thoroughly disinfected there will be no insect posts of any kind. The first broiler chickens often sell for $1 a pound and later seldom for less than $5 per dozen. Orchard and Garden. Clean tillage. Everybody believes in It, but few practice It. - Raspberry plants affected with crown gall should be dug out and burned. There Is no cure. Where orchards are kept In grass, the grass should b$ mowed and left to lie In place under the trees to rot. A neat, clean, well painted and let tered market wagon attracts atten tion and helps to sell produce at good prices. If the leaves of your apple and peach trees show dark green nnd the zrowth is vigorous, you know that the>soll Is *ll v right. Thd\soll for the apple orchard must be thoroughly drained. It will not do to let stand about the roots of the trees! l Apple trees Ado best at aidistanee of two rods eacuwvay, unless It is a va riety that tendAto grow upward rath er than outwaroN Flacing a small\heap of rich stable manure around of each tree in the orchard will jwove to be a little time most profltablyfc-spent. It costs money to atep.on a ladder, as an orchard owner soomfinds, and all that can reasonably beVlone by prun ing to start the head trees low and keep it low is payingUnvestment.
