THE COCHRAN JOURNAL
Mercer Again
£By James CallaVoay.
Traveling over the state this week
I have been asked so often, “What
is the matter with Mercer? What is
her grievance? Have Macon, its city
fathers and citizens deserted the
college? Have your Baptist people
lost enterest? Have you rejected
propositions from the board of
trustees? It is a surprise to us,
and we Baptist out of Macon want
information. Give us the facts”
To this the reply was that we in
Maeon are also in the dark and
need information; and we are also
treated to a surprise. No plans or
propositions have been formulated
and presented to us. Elberton
gave us our first surprise, and the
Elberton committee gave us the sec
ond surprise—the surprise that
wounded. The Elberton committee
said in their report that the remov
al question grew out of the action of
the board of trustees two years ago.
In the enterval, from this setting on
foot a quiet agitation for removal
two years ago, to the meeting of
EVERYBODY
FOR
the convention at Elberton, Macon
was not put on notice of any griev
ance. No proposition looking to
expansion extension, enlargement,
ban been laid before us.
Perhaps the trustees thought as \
they sold as residence lots tlie eight
acres of land donated by the city
for college purposes, and this very
land, sold, lay in the path of ex
tension of ground that Mercer had
been thus hemmed in and exten
sion impossible. Anyway, Macon
should have been given an oppor
tunity to solve the problem before
placing the college on the humiliat
ing block, its measurement to be
taken in “filthy lucre’’
Mercer is ideally located: An
easy walk to the first Baptist church
and the First Methodist, with Tat
nall Square church on Meroes’s
grounds. It is not a long walk to
the union depot. Two street car
lines pass Mercer. Yet, with all
this accessibility Mercer enjoys the
quiet of the country, and enjoys a
splendid patronage.
