BUSTLING CITY.
What makes a town, any
way? I- it the wealth evi
denced bv fine homes and
splendid store buildings? These
may attest the stability and
thrift of certain people, hut
they offer no great inducements
to commercial and moral pro
gress. Is it the spirit of good
order and i iw observance? That
ite-a factor only. The sleepiest
old hamlets that dot the map
have this spirit in rank abund
ance. Is it the schools and
churches? May their number
ever increase, hut they don't
make a town —they only culture
it. Is it the geographical loca
tion, the character of the coun
try surrounding, the shipping
facilities, the natural advan
tages?
None.of these is an essential.
Well, w tat is it that makes a
town anyway? Just one tiling
—the unity of the people, the
existence of a common lmnd
which causes business and so
cial enemies to put aside all
differences when it comes to
lioosting Urn town. No town
ever made real progress on the
way to substantial success with
out the get together spirit unan
imously adopted, it has rejuv
enated old hulks of towns that
were yawning their way into
endless sleep. It has iufusgd
new lifeblood into the heart of
commercial life and made
thriving cities out of paralytic
villages Natural advantages
count for much, and prosperity
cannot he built on shifting
sand, hut any town with half a
chance can he made to grow
and expand and thrive when
its citizens join with one accord
in the boosting program.
The above was clipped from the
Valdosta Times, a most enterprising
and hustling paper published in the
eity of Valdosta, the queen city of
South Georgia, a city that has
shown a greater percentage of
growth, in the past, decade, than
any other eity in the state of Geor
gia. This article, coming from this
source, is more than an inspiration.
It is, no doubt, the keynote to the
wonderful success achieved by Val
dosta and is the spirit that isarous-
South Georgia to the accomplish
ment of greater things than has ev
er been accomplished before —op-
timism,' unity of purpose, the ar
dent desire of every citizen for pro
gress, confidence in our ability to
succeed and go forward as other
cities have in the onward march of
progress.
What is the matter with Coch
lan? frothing on earth. We have
the best schools, the best water, the
IK i st electric light system of any city
we know of. Our hanks are as sol
id as the rock of Gibraltar. Our
merchants are just as clever as can
Ire. Our people arc just simply an
ideal people to live among, and we
know of no worthy citizen of our

community who does not love Coch
ran and her people. Then, what do
we lack? More optimi m, more
spirit of enterprise, more unity, ev
erybody to boost Cochran? When
ever there is art enterprise on foot,
if you have one particle of enter
prise in your make-up or tire slight
est interest in the weliare of 3 our
I town, doht discourage it. If vou
have no money to put into it, give
it a push, with a cheerful word, and
bid it God speed with what influ
ence you have. For Heaven’s sake,
don’t say that it will never lie done,
that you have heard such talk be
fore, and that the youngest child in
Cochran will lie grayheadod before
I such an enterprise will he built.
If you can’t stick up to your own
community by talking for it, work
ing for it, and lending your influ
ence to make a better, larger, and
more prosperous city, tuis town
don’t need you
If you desire, Mr. Croaker, to
simply continue to harp about this
town being dead you might as well
go off to the tall timbers and wrap
yourself in the solitude of your own
musing; for you will not he able to
keep up \-itli our enthusiastic pro
cession. We are going to grow, and
don’t you forget it. Seventeen new
members have just been added, to
our Chamber of Commerce and they
are pledged to boost Cochran and
help make her grow. We want ev
ery good • itizen in our city to join
our Chamber of Commerce, and
help work for Cochran: and it wont
lx; long before the “croakers” will
be as scarce as hen tent li .
