THE SOUTH'S ADVANCEMENT
Southern Commercial Con
gress convenes in Atlanta
March 8-, 9-, and 10-th. An
elaborate and most interest
ing program has been ar
jauged and some of the most
'distinguished speakers, prom
inent business men, and fi
nanciers will he there to take
part in the exercises. This
means a great deal for the
{South, and will mark another
epoch in the history of our
wonderful developments.
Nearly fifty years ago a
cruel, fratricidal war spread
devastation throughout the
limits of our beloved Sunny
South. Our homes were des
troyed and business paralyzed.
The best blood of our republic
lay beneath the soil —martyrs
to their c< untry’s cause, —and
th • remaining noble surviv
ors, barefoot and ragged re
turned to their once splendid
homes to find them mort
gaged and their wives and
children lighting for exist
ence. All gone except hon
or, but with an heroism befit
ting the m. s erful men who
fought our battles and en
rolled their names high upon
the scroll of fame, they set to
work to rebuild their homes,
recuperate their fortunes, and
like the pluenix rising from
the ashes, she stands today a
living example of the splen
did heroism of her noble men
and the beautiful virtue of her
incomparable women, and to
day the eyes of the world are
centered upon the {south,
which is destined to become
the commercial and industrial
center of this Republic.
All hail to the Southern
Commercial Congress and
throe cheers for our l late City
for securing the meeting oi
this body of prominent and
distinguished citizens.
The Cochran Joiii'iiid, one of the
brightest weeklies that comes to
this office, is v. hooping things up
for the v arc Xovth <Y South Rail
way. Numerous otner public-spir
ited and enterprising citizens of
Cochran are loin ing hearty support
to the now railroad proposition. —
