THE FARMERS' CORN CLUB CONTINUES
TO GROW IN INTEREST AND NUMBERS.
Since Last Issue Many Prominent Planters
Have Entered the Contest
Our corn dub keeps growing ami
would like to see every farmer in
.this vicinity enter the contest.
Last week we failed to publish
some of the most prominent names
in the club. This week we take
pleasure in publishing another list
and will thank anyone, who reads
this list, to advise us if we have
left out any names. T Ids is a free
for-all contest, open to any farmer
in our territory, and should any
name be left off, it will simply be
done througrfirror. Our intelli
gent farmers are thoroughly aroused
see the absolute necessity of
Mfcperoting for the benefit of our
and dor the improvement of
methods.
Wipe out the farms and every
other interest in this county ''ill
wither and die. Our merchants
would go into bankruptcy, our
banks would close their doors, grass
and weeds would grow up in the
streets of our city and, ere long our
buildings would crumble to tne
ground and hardly a vestige would
remain to mark the place where the
best corn club of Georgia was or
ganized in two weeks, where a new
railroad is soon to he built, and
where Bleckley county will soon he
formed and numbered among the
best and most progressive counties
in the state of Georgia.
Mr. Farmer, it is up to you. T\e
appeal to you as a patriot; we ap
peal to you as a man who loves his
neigh For; we appeal to you as a
man from whose home conies the
strength and hope of our country
from vine covered cottage with its
humble surroundings to stately
mansion withits thousand of
acres —to join us in our efforts to
uplift our county and place it in the
front rank of all the counties in the

Rural Telephones
One of the chief indications of the
progressiveness of the Anderson
county farmer is shown by the num
ber of farmers’ line telephones in
the county. According to informa
tion secured at the office ot Bell
company here, there are 29 farmers’
lines connected with the Anderson
exchange, serving 150 farmers, and
150 more telephones arc served by
the farmers’ exchanges at Sandy
Springs; at Princeton, ju.a over the
line in Laurens county, from Honeu
Path, and at Lowndesviile, just over
the line in Abbeville_coimty. These
last two farmers’ exchanges, while
not in Anderson county, draw the
greater portion of their patronage
from Anderson The 300 farmers’
telephones are all inside the county.
One of the seven sections of
switchboard in the local telephone
exchange is devoted entirely to the
uses of the farmers’ linis. The
other farmers’ exchanges —those
mentioned at Sandy Springs,
Princeton and Lowndesviile —are
connected with the Anderson ex
change with direct trunk lines. This
gives to the rural telephone connect
ion with the city and long distance
lines of the Bell at all times. A re
markable increase is shown in the
number of farmers’ telephones.
Five years ago there were 35 tele
phones in the county outside the city,
served by four lines, connected with
the exchange here.
In a measure, each-of the farmers’
telephone lines connected with the
local exchange is an independent
company. The plan lias been for
those farmers who wanted ’phones
to get together and organize, elect
ing a president and other officers.
A fund was raised for the erection
of the line, securing equipment,
etc., to build the line to the city
limits. Here the Bell company
made the connection with the ex
change. The farmers who have
thus organized themselves look after
and keep up the lines, and service
is furnished them at low rates, con
nections being available with the
city and long distance lines.
It is believed that Anderson
county has more rural telephones
than any other county in the state.
This claim is made by Manager W.
S. Beaty of the local exchange, and
also by others who are more or less
familiar with such matters. The
progress raadeMuring the 'past five
years in this line has certainly been
remarkable, and would not have
been possible hut for the fact that
Anderson county’s farmers are not
only prosperous, hut modern and
up-to-date. They are hard workers
but appreciate and seek after con
veniences in their homes. —Ander-
son (S. C.) Daily Mail.
