Not For Willie.
A country woman and her little
boy were visiting the city, and while
seeing the sights of the place the
mother’s eyes were attracted by the
showy display of stuffed animals in
a taxidermist’s shop window.
“Let’s go in here and see what
we can get for you, Willie,” said the
mother.
“Sure, ma, and” — His ey% fell
upon a sign over the door which
read, “Let us tan your hides.”
“Oh, no, no', ma; let’s don’t go in
there! I get ’nuff of that at home,”
he cried excitedly, and they passed
up the taxidermist’s shop.—Xa- j

MEMMORIAL DAY OBSERVED,
Memorial Day was very fittingly
observed by the Cochran U. D. C.
c hapter yesterday. An elal«orato
dinner was served by the Daughters
|at their tea room for the veterans
land the honorary members of the
I chapter, after which an elegant pro
gram was rendered at the Opera
! House. After the ceremonies a
| procession was formed of old sol
deir» and, together with the daugh
ters and a number of others,
marched to the cemetery where the
graves of the departed soldiers were
decorated.
The programme given in the last
issue of the Journal was rendered
with the exception of the reading of
the prize essay. This essay had
been misplaced, and a declamation
by Emory Ashell was substituted
for the reading.
There were two prizes given for
the essays: the first was won by
Thomas Hall, and the second by
' Marguerite Frquhart.
Although their ranks have been
thinned since last year, a large
number of veterans were in atten
dance, each of whom were present
ed with a beautiful red carnation by
the F. I). G.’s worthy president,
Mrs. A. .1. Thompson, Jr.
Mrs. Thompson urged the school
children to take especial interest in
their Southern history and prepare
themselves to enter the contest for
the Slat,! Essay Medal next year,
and promised them that they would
be given bettor literature to work
from. Three large framed por
traits of Southern heroes were pre
sented to the school by the Daugh
ters.
