INVESTIGATION OF
EIGHTY EXPLOSIONS
(cOXTIXI KT) FROM T'-HiST PAUF.)
Namara, and Ortie McManigal, at
at Detroit, all of whom are being
taken to Los .nigeles t > answer in
dictments, charging them with com
plicity in the Angeles Times
building explosion, in which 21
lives were lost, there continued to
lie rumors today of future arrests,
but the police and others concerned
dedisi d to comment on them.
The agiiits of the Erectors’ asso
ciation, an organization of struetual
iron contractors, against whose ef
forts to conduct open shops” the
explosions are alleged to have been
directed, also refused to say today
whether they expected to find more
“plants” of dynamite than those al
ready uncovered. The “depots”
in which it is charged the “wreck
ing crews” stored explosives to lie
used from time to time, so far found
are as follows:
Shed in rear of home of McMani
gal, father of Ortie E. McManigal,
at Tiffin, Ohio, 400 pounds of dyn
amite found last night, alleged to
have been stolen from France >Sto M e
Company’s quarry at Bloomville,
< )hio, last January.
Storage department in basement
of building in Indianapolis, in
which are offices of International
Association of Bridge and Iron
workers, 100 pounds of dynamite
and exploding apparatus found,
surrounded by hooks and papers of
the association, Saturday night.
Shed at home of 1). Jones, near
Indianapolis, alleged to have been
rented by J. J. McNamara, 2o
pounds of dynamite and two quarts
of nitroglycerine, found Saturday
night.
President Ryan, of the iron
Workers' association, last night is
sued a statement condemning the

had been “created by agents of un
ion labor.”
j Other members of the executive
hoard of the association today af

and disclaimed all responsibility

Detective W. J. Burns, who led
in the treasurer of the Internation
al Asso iation of Bridge and .Struc
tural Iron Workers, heie last Sat
urday for complicity in arrest of
John J. McNamara, secretary, the
alleged dynamiting of the Los An
gles Times building October 1, last
in which 21 persons were killed, is
expected to return to Indianapolis
some time this morning. He went
to Tiffin, Ohio, where he confiscated
about 400 pounds of dynamite
stored in the home of James Mc-
Manigal, father of Ortie McManigal
who with James W. McNamara, is
on his way to Los Angeles in cus
tody of officials, the latter McNam
ara, a printer, was arrested in Dif
troiS
More developenients are expected
here with the return of Burns, and
it is predicted that more arrests
may be made.
It is said that some of the records
taken from the offices of the union
here in the raid Saturday night
will have an important hearing on
the eases of the men when they are
put on trial. It is said there are a
number of receipts, showing that
money had been paid to the men
under arrest, and that the daks
of these receipts eorresp md with
the dates of some of the larger ex
plosions, and also that these dis
bursements were no*, printed in the
official journal as prescribed by the
union’s constitution.
• Indianapolis labor leaders are
loud in their denunciation- of Mc
namara’s arrest and the action of
I . .
I the police in spiriting him out of
! the state. Tne central labor union
meets tonight and it is intimated
that strong resolutions on the sub
ject will Ik* adopted.
Governor Marshall today assured
F. M. Rvan, President of ihe
Structual Iron Workers, that if any
more requisitions came from Cali
fornia in connection with the Los
Angeles dynamiting,, he would take
steps to insure the accused man a
hearing in the courts before he is
extradited.
The governor declared he was
not criticising Judge Collins, of the
Indianapolis city court, for the
courts action of Saturday.
“I presume,” he said, “that
Judge Collins did his duty. But,
because it has been charged tliat
J. J. McNamara, who has been ex
tradited, has l>een ‘railroaded’ from
the state without proper opportuni
ty to present his case, I believe eve
ry precaution should lx? taken to
guard against a repetition of the
charge.”
WILL MCCANT IS ASSASSINATED.
Early Saturday night, Will Mc-
Cant, a prosperous farmer, living
near Chester, Ga., was shot in the
side and fatally injured by an un
known party. McCant had just
finished supper, and had just step
ped out of his back door when the
fatal shot was fired. From the na
ture of the wound, it was evident
that the assassin was only a few
yards from his victim, perhaps just
outside the yard. The weapon used
was a shot gun.
McCant lived until Monday
morning, and accused one of his
neighlxirs, Berry Roland, of the
shooting. It seems that there had
been some feud existing lx*tween
these men for some time past and
that they had had several quarrels,
the difficulty arising from a dispute
over some land.
As there was no witness to the af
fray, and no proof of the guilt of
Roland, no arrest lias yet been
made. It has not been learned
what Ho land has to say of the
affair.
