Diversified Farming
Along Southern
Atlanta, Feb. 26th. An average
yield of 49.6 bushela of corn i**r
acre vvaa secured by 498 farmers in
Alabama and Mississippi who cult -
rated 6,352.5 acr s in 1912, follow
ing the methods advocated by the
field agents of the Department of
Farm Improvement Work, main
tained by the Companies that make
up the Southern Railway System.
On neighltoring farms where the or
dinary methods were followed the
average yield 17.5 bushels. In the
same state 674 farmers who grew
cotton under methods advocated by
this Department had an average
production of 1,205.5 pounds of
seed cotton per acre on 14,386 acres
while on neighboring farms where
ordinary methods were followed the
average yield was 531.5 pounds of
seed cotton per acre. C. A.
laiwrence, of IMantersville, Ala.,
averaged 109.25 bushels of corn pci
acre on 35 acres; A. Henderson, of
Greenwood, Miss , averaged 100
bushels per acre on 25 acres; B.
Killian, of Collinsville, Ala., av
eraged 2,732 pounds of seed cotton
per acre on 6 acres; Dr. C. N. Par
nell, of Maplesville, Ala., averaged
2,313 pounds on 20 acre,-, and a
long list of other farmers who made
splendid yields of both corn and
cotton by following tne methods
advocated by the Department could
he given.
These figures from the annual re
port of Mr. O. T. Plunkett, Man; -
ger of the Department, show what
is Iteing acomplishod l»y farmers
living along the lims of the South
ern Railway and affiliated ( ompa
nies through the aid of the agricult
ural experts, the farmers in all
cases cultivating thtir own land
with the resources at their com
mand, The work of this I Apart
ment has been extended to all
states served by the Southern Rail
way and affiliated lines, field agents
having lawn placed in Virginia,
North and South Carolinas, Geor
gia, Kentucky and Tennessee in
September, 1912. They have been
cordially received and it is expected
that their work will prove as sue
cessful as that of the agents in Ala
bama and Mississippi.
The Department of Farm Ini'
provement Work grew out of the
movement inaugurated by Presi
dent Finley to aid the farmers in
the territory threatened by the
Mexican 801 l Weevil, to learn how
to grow cotton in spite of the wee
vil. For this purpose practical far
mers who had grown cotton in
Texas under 801 l Weevil conditions
were employed and their work
proved so successful in not only
aiding farmers to successfully com
bat the weevil but also iu teaching
them hi get larger yields per acre
by adoption of proper methods of
culture, rotation of crops, and
greater attention to live stock rais
ing, that President Finley deter
mined to extend the benefits of this
work to to the entire territory along
the Southern and affiliated lines.
The field agents in the service of
the Department are agricultural ex
perts whose services are given with
out any cost to the farmers and
who work in full co-operation with
the state ami federal departments
of agricultural and the various state
agricultural colleges.
