The Boy
Were I to ask my readers to de
fine a boy. many and varied would
l»e the answefs. He is so many
sided that none of us see him at the
same angle.
A complex problem is he, and
yet none so engrossing—none upon
which is being focussed so intense
ly, the eye of the specialist. In
this connection we shall consider
him from his spiritual and social
sides. I have been reading some
splendid articles on the Scout move
ment recently, and all honor to the
great man who so loves and appre
ciates the moral and physical de
mands of the lx>y that lie could de
vote his splendid talent and valua
ble time to the establishing of such
an order. What have the Christian
men of our churches lieen doing
that they are not the pioneers in
such organizations? That its splen
did features of combined physical
and spiritual development have not
lieen used to draw the boy into vi
tal touch with the churches?
Let us be about our Father’s
business in this matter. Hut the
lioy! fn dealing with the boy we
are not to consider his reclamation,
but work under the assumption
that it is bettor to hold the boy in
the first place. The normal boy’s
nature is loyal and loving, to direct
his forces into proper channels —not
to suppress them —is the accom
plishment of that rare individual
who can understand a boy. lie is
responsive to the personal touch,
love him and he will shame you
with his loyal devotion, reach out
for him and he will beholden of
you, grip him with divine enthusi
asm, cram him full of the many in
teresting facts of heroic missions
and sacred literature and you will
find his mind like his stomach lias
no limit to its capacity. Being
very important he is well aware of
the fact, and only awaits being
so taken byadults. To teach him
to put true value upon the right
service is our privilege.
Oh, that the Church may take
the Ury seriously enough to provide
through his church what he needs
and desires, that he may not go
elsewhere, even for his physical de
velopment.
A sad picture is presented to us
in the old age of Eli, the Priest
who came to grief and death be
cause of the disgrace of bis sons,
and one cannot but think if he had
“ruled his own household,” a
brighter history of Israel might
have been written.
Are we spending our energy in
promiscuous laliors when boys of our
own faith are going away from our
churches untrained and indifferent
to the work that must fall on their
shoulders?
The princess said to Moses’
mother, “Take the child and nur
ture (?) it for me.” Well did Jo
chebed understand the training Je
hovah had Moses and we know she
measured up to her responsibility.
Our boys\ are worthy of our best,
they are our greatest as well as our
gravest task and indeed the asset of
the church militant is the noble boy
being trained symmetrically into
Christian soldiery. If there is one
secret our churches are slow to learn
it is that the lroys religious life
seeks, but finds no expression.
To hold the hoy is the problem
of the churches, to train him in
Christian activity, their crowning
glory and only through such activi
ties can the churches take their
rightful place of power among men.
Important! Was not the little
English lad, Geo. Moflitt, the most
important fruit of the o!d discour
aged, Nun sisters’ preaching? Let
us forget not, them are possibilities
in the youth in our churches that
we can not know —possibly that
only the Master who created them
knows. He demands appreciation
of these hidden powers. His fu
ture messengers are in our hands as
clay to be moulded at Ilis call.
Let us mold them into vessels fit
for the Master’s use.
I seem to scarcely have touched
the borders of this subject. You
who have undertaken this task
know the exquisite facination of it
also you know the demands upon
your physical as well as spiritual
strength. But we are under the
banner of the King of kings and
cannot fail.
Behold the boy! What kind it a
man will be make? The kind we
want him to make if we want this
in dead earnest. From the very
depths of my heart I feel like cry
in the words of Eugene Foster, “I
live but one life and may live that
life all too poorly, but I have a
vision of a better life, that some
man coming after me may live, I
spend my time, my thoughts, my
money, my very self in imparting
that vision to a few boys. They
see it! They live it! And my life
weak and faulty, is reincarnated in
them, stronger, finer, greater than
I have ever dared to be.”
We may fight odds and seeming
>y a losing battle, but God is for
ns and who can prevail against us.
The promise is to the faithful. Let
us move up. Unfurl the banners
of the King before the host of boys
md lead them on to victory in lie
buttle of the day —The battle of rigb
leonsness against worldiness.
Mothers! Fathers!! Are you wil
ling to stand by those who are try
mg in Gods name to win your boy,-
for Christ? Will you not with all
the love of your true hearts, encour
ige them, not by words or deeds,
inly tin* presence of your boy and
md your prayers. That is most ly
what we need. Teach them the
pandner of going to Gods bouse to
the blessing lie lias for the hoys,
each them to let this come first.
Do not make plans or excuses to
keep them away. Instead plan foi
diem to go, encourage, lemind them
see that they go, and pray for them
as they go.
1 was pleased to hear a visitor,
ipeak recently kindly and very en
couragingly of the conduct of our
noys in the last few mouths. 'Phi
joy it gave me to watch their faces
is they listened to this is in expres
sible. How they appreciated it.
In the name of all our young peo
ples organizations we thank you for’
your patronage, and encouragement
and liberal donations to our work,
and the causes we foster. You have
helped us to feel more like pushing
on! on! on! and as we strive we
earnestly and prayerfully solicit
your help. Patronize our special
programs and entertainments, and
show not only your hoys but also
your girls that you want them to
engage in things fine and clean
Rally to our work and ere long w<
will see a great awakening in the
spiritual life of Cochran. Why is
it that we cannot find leaders for
our prayer meetings and other relig
ions services? We have not been
trained. Lets train our boys and
girls and we will not hear such a
cry for leaders. So he died for h V
faith. 'Phis is fine, more than most
of us do. But say, can you add to
that line. That he lived for it, too.
