The ranks of Georgia journalism have another member that
has set an example that all weekly newspapers will sooner or later
have to adopt, The Dublin Courier-Herald announces that be
ginni >g with the first issue in this month, no legal advertisment
will be taken unless the ad is accompanied with the cash. The
amount that publishers lose in this manner is not inconsiderable,
and a good many papers already require the money in advance, —

The situation in Mexico is now regarded as critical. Provi
sional President Huerta has dissolved the Mexican Congress, ar
rested and placed in prison 110 deputies.
The Congress not being in accord with Huerta’s policies, it is
probable that in order to retain complete power over the Capital,
Huerta will soon declare martial law.
In the present state of affairs it seems hardly possible for a
constitutional election to take place in Mexico as scheduled Octo
ber 26th.
The United States wore confidently looking forward to this
election as a peaceful solution of affairs in Mexico, but now with
the dissolution of both branches of Congress and the arrest of the
deputies, no one will hardly dare to take issue with Huerta and
there could not be any free expression of the peoples’ will.
Another great vessel has been destroyed at sea and this time
by fire. In a raging storm in mid-Atlantic on last Thursday, the
steamer Volturno was destroyed by fire on her way from Rotter
dam to New York. It was first reported that 236 of her passen
gers and crew lost their lives but it later developed that there was
a mistake in the wireless telegram and there were only 136 instead
of 236 lost. After the great Titanic disaster both the American
and British governments instituted searching investigations, and
established stricter requirments over vessels under their control,
but it seems that the Volturno, which sailed under an inspectors
certificate from the British board of trade was not adequately
equipped with fire apparatus.
The majority of disasters on rail and at sea are caused by a
failure to observe the usual rules of precaution or by carelessness
that could have been prevented.
Hobson, the hero of the Merrimack, the transcontinental
kisser, the Japanese "boomerang,” is in the lime light again. He
launched a red hot attack against the senatorial campaign of Dem
ocratic leader Underwood, in the house of representatives last
Monday, charging him with being the tool of Wall Street and
liquor interests. He supported Underwood in his presidential cam
paign but says r.o vit was obtained under false pretenses. Under
wood was alright as a presidential candidate but all wrong as a
senitorial candidate against the intrepid Hobson.
His attack against Underwood made little impression on the
house and when Mr. Underwood rose to reply he was loudly
cheered by Democrates and republicans.
The man whom the Democrats put forward as leader and un
der whose leadership and broad statesmanship the party has been
able to accomplish so much has been characterized by this man
Hobson not only as a tool of Wall Street but as a dummy used as a
tool. In other words the great Hobson says that Underwood was
in the hands of the managers and was being used and apparently
did not have sense enough to know it. Why didn't Hobson have
sense enough to find it out before he became a candidate for the
United States Senate?
Politics is a great thing anyway. A fellow rises and falls up
on the whimsical wave of public opinion. Sinks or swims as the
tide ebbs and flows. One season his friends place him upon a pin
nacle and laud him to the skies, and perhaps the next season they
will crucify him to the cross, but we venture to say that Hobson
will have a harder time sinking Underwood than he did the Merri
mack.
