Our Town
The fact that the town of Coch
ran in ocrs should make us inter
ested, public spirited and filled
with pride.
Cochran is young. J>o not com
pare it with town twice as old.
Think what we have in and around
our little “city”. Think <>f the
! prize.- won for Cochran at almost
every State Fair.
In the city limits we have a cot
ton mill, oil mill, planing mill,
two gins, wood-yard, an electric
light pi mt, water works, two ware
houses, a garage, a place where ve
hicles of all kinds are sold, an up
to-date tailo.ing establishment, a
hakery. two pressing clubs, three
hanks, five churches and two
school buildings that any town
should be proud of. Besides these
there are many large and small
stores, a newspaper office, moving
picture, a large hotel and cafe.
We boast of five physicians, six
lawyers and two dentists.
Among the handsome residences
and beautifully kept lawns are
those of J. H. Mull is, Jr., J. P., J.

The past year a great work has
been done In the “Civic League,”
with the assistance of mayor and
council.
For the incoming year the ladies
have many plans for making our
town beautiful and sanitary.
Work has been done at the Ceme
tery, hut there is more to do. So
often a grave is dug and our loved
ones are buried with rain pouring
in torrents. With little cost, a tent
can he provided, flowers planted, a
chapel erected and seats provided.
A sprinkler and stepping stones
for the streets are-needed, stagnant
pools should he filled, sanitary bar
rels for waste paper thrown on the
streets, and more light near public
buildings (the school for instance)
are necessary improvements.
All these things and more the
Civic League and Council will do
for you most cheerfully.
Will you encourage them by do
ing away with unjust criticisms and
by gi.ing them your assistance?
Every innovation has to fight for
its life. Tis true of the Civic Lea
gue. Every good tiling has once
been condemned. In the time of
Mozart musicians were classed as
stablemen and cooks Electricity
and gas were eonsiderd dangerous.
In looking back thru history we
will find that every good and beau
tiful thing lias at one time been as
sailed as an evil.
Very cheerfully have the majority
of citizens contributed to the work
being done by the city officers and
Civic League. Even strangers have
fallen in line. Last Friday evening
Mr. Martin gave 60 per cent of the
pioceeds from the Moving Picture
Show; thus adding nineteen to the
ninety-eight dollars already in the
treasury of the Civic League. For
more than a year public spirited
business men have paid the rent on
the Rest Room. Too much cannot
be said of such generous donations.
The Rest Room has proven a
blessing to ladies from the country.
Mothers once forced to stay at
home, now bring their little ones
with them and spend a whole day
shopping.
At its last meeting the Civic Lea
gue decided to beautify and put in
good condition bridges on the main
street.
Will not some public spirited
citizens give a plot of ground on
every street? How pleasant when
walking to come to some cool invit
ing place where rustic seats are
found and lovely flowers growing.
Surely, you who are able will do
nate such a plot, or just allow the
use of it.
The following committees to as
sist in beautifying streets have been
appointed:
