How The Red Cross
Seal Originated
Nearly $1,500,000 has been raised
by Red Cross Christmas Seals in the
last five years, and yet many peo
ple do not know how this charity
■lamp idea originated.
Some of your grandmothers first
played “poi-toffi-e” with stickers
similar to Red Cross Seals ’way
back in 1862, when they conceived
the idea n{ sell - g f' imps at fairs
for the benefit ‘.f tl ‘- re ief funds
for ths f.Tl.ets’ ho-pi-als in Brook
lyn, Boston and elsewhere. Nearly
$1,000,000 was raved in this way
before 1865. After the war, thin
method of raising money was dis

So impressed was she with
this success that she induced the
American Red Cress to take up the
•ale in 1908 on a national basis.
With very little organization and
with hardly any attempt at careful
advertising, ttie sale that year
brought in, ne. -rt!u over $135,
000 for anti tuberculosis work in
various parts of the United States.
In 1909, with more, thorough or
ganizations, the sale w is increased
to $230,000; in 1910 to nearly
$310,000; m 1911 t > over $330 000
and over 40,000,000 soils, netting
$400,000, were sold last. year.

cells each; also two cells for lunatics
and females; cell portion will be

The construction of said Jail to
begin on .January loth, 1914, and
to be completed by May loth, 1914.
Payment for work and material
to be in 3 installments, as follows,
to wit: $2,000.00 when first floor
joist is laid. $2,000.00 when sec
ond floor joist is laid and $0,000,00
to be paid when the building is ful
ly completed and accepted by arch
itects, building committee and or
dinary or his successor.
Each bidder to deposit with his
bid a certified check for $250, pay
able to the Ordinary of said county
or his successor, as a guarantee
that he will enter into a contract
with the county upon the terms of
his bill within 20 days after its ac
ceptance and give a bond with secur
ity for the faithful performance of

00; and that, upon his failure to
enter into such contract and give

ed bv the ordinary or his successor
as liquidated damages. Plans and
specifications may be procured by
contractors wishing to make a bid

house for said county; to be two stories: to con
tain offices for all necessary County officials,

built of brick, with limestone trimmings, slate
roof, copper doome, steel truesses, etc. Build
ing will he heated by one pipe, low pressure
steam system and is to cost not more than Thir
ty-five Thousand |535,000.00] Dollars. The
